While cost and location are critical concerns when deciding on a school, they are not the sole ones. Qualifiers including reputation and accreditation need to be taken into account as well. And if you are interested in studying in your home in front of your computer instead of in a classroom, then finding an accredited online program will also be included in your vetting process. We will cover these qualifiers and some others that you will want to include when reviewing pharmacy technician schools. But to begin with, let’s discuss what a pharmacy technician does, the degree and certification options available, and the benefits of online programs.

The Function of a Pharmacy Technician

Abernant AL pharmacy tech filling prescriptionPharmacy technicians have numerous job functions, but their primary duty is to dispense prescription medicines. Since they are not licensed, when dispensing prescriptions they must work under the management of a licensed Abernant AL pharmacist. They must also have good customer service skills since they will be dealing directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be precise when filling prescription medications per the pharmacist’s instructions. And they must have an in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology so that they may help customers with understanding instructions for their medications as well as other pharmaceutical literature and information. However, under no circumstance should they ever give medical advice relating to prescriptions or anything else. All such questions would be addressed by the pharmacist. A few of the regular daily functions a pharmacy tech may perform are:

  • Welcome and help customers with prescriptions and other questions
  • Prepare prescription drugs under pharmacist direction
  • Add prescription and customer data into pharmacy computer system
  • Call customers when their medications are prepared for pick-up
  • Prepare and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Re-supply shelves and audit and control inventory

As a consequence of their job, pharmacy technicians will spend the majority of their working day on their feet. And working evenings and weekends is also very common, particularly for newer technicians with lower seniority. But the reward for occasional tired and aching feet or at times having to work off-hours is a very satisfying career assisting people with their health and well-being.

Abernant AL student attending online pharmacy tech courseBefore selecting a pharmacist tech online program, it’s important to realize that the majority of programs do require that a substantial part of the training be carried out in a clinical environment. This is typically satisfied in an area Abernant pharmacy or hospital through an internship program. Students in most cases will have the opportunity to work under an experienced pharmacy technician so as to obtain some work place experience. Fortunately the balance or non-clinical training can be accessed online in your Abernant AL home or via any available computer. This alternative is more practical for most students, especially for those who continue to work while acquiring their certificate or degree. And online schools are frequently less expensive than classroom options. Tuition and expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced significantly. With both the online and the clinical training, a comprehensive education is offered. But not all online colleges are accredited, which is critical for obtaining certification and employment (more on accreditation later). So check that each online school you are reviewing is accredited by an acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are disciplined enough to learn with a less formal type of education, then online instruction may be the ideal choice for you.

Pharmacist Technician Certification Options

It is not required to earn certification in every state, but a large number of graduates of pharmacy technician colleges elect to get certified in order to be more competitive in the job market. Also, many Abernant AL pharmacies will only hire a technician that is certified. There are 2 organizations that provide certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requires that the candidate be at least 18 years old, be a high school graduate, has completed a training program, and has one or more years of work experience. The PTCB just requires that the candidate has graduated high school and passes their examination. Recertification is called for every two years by each program, which can be met by completing 20 hours of continuing education.

What to Ask Pharmacist Tech Schools

Questions to ask Abernant AL pharmacy technician schoolsOnce you have decided whether you want to obtain a degree or a certificate, and if you want to enroll in an online college or go to classes on campus, you can begin to target your school alternatives. There are many pharmacy technician programs to choose from in the Abernant AL area and throughout the Country, so you must develop a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast community colleges and trade schools. As we addressed in our introduction, you will most likely first start looking for programs that are within both your financial budget and driving distance from your Abernant home. If you are able to relocate or are going to enroll in an online pharmacy tech school, then location may not be significant. But there are several other variables that you need to take into consideration in order to adequately compare programs. The following questions will help you in collecting that information and help you to make your ultimate choice.

Is the Pharmacy Tech College Accredited? Most pharmacist tech colleges and vocational schools have earned a regional or national accreditation. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Schools earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and certified to provide a comprehensive quality education. Online schools may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals only with online or distance learning. Make sure to verify that the degree or certificate program in addition to the school you pick are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain a quality education, it can help in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Also, certification may mandate that the training program is accredited. And many Abernant AL employers will only hire entry level employees that have earned a degree from an accredited school.

Does the School Ready You for Certification? Certification is not required in every state, but many pharmacies desire that the technicians they employ are certified. The pharmacy tech school needs to ready its students to pass the NHA or the PTCB exam. Students interested in obtaining NHA certification will also need one year of work experience. This requirement may be met by participating in a college sponsored internship program.

Does the College Provide Internship Programs? As we previously discussed, the NHA requires one year of job experience for certification, which may be met by means of an internship program. One of the best ways to get practical clinical experience as a pharmacy tech is to work out in the field. Most pharmacy tech degree or certificate programs also require clinical training prior to graduation and an internship is an excellent way to fulfill the requirement. Ask if the schools have a working relationship with Abernant AL area pharmacies, hospitals, or clinics for internship programs.

Does the College Offer Job Placement Assistance? Securing that first job in Abernant AL upon graduation, especially with no experience, can be a difficult task without any assistance. Find out if the schools you are researching have job placement programs. If so, ask what their job placement rates are. A higher job placement rate is an indicator that the school has an excellent reputation within the profession creating demand for its graduates. It also means that it has a sizable network of employer contacts where it can place graduating students.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Abernant AL residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the pharmacist tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the pharmacy tech school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Abernant AL area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
