They must also have good customer service skills because they will be dealing directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be absolute when filling prescription drugs per the pharmacist’s instructions. And they must have an extensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terms so that they may assist customers with understanding directions for their prescriptions as well as other pharmaceutical information and literature. On the other hand, under no situation should they ever offer medical advice concerning prescriptions or anything else. Any such questions would be handled by the pharmacist. Some of the common daily services a pharmacy technician might carry out are:

  • Receive and assist customers with prescriptions and other questions
  • Dispense prescription drugs under pharmacist direction
  • Add prescription and customer data into pharmacy computer system
  • Contact customers when their medications are ready for pick-up
  • Complete and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Re-supply shelves and audit and control inventory

As a consequence of their profession, pharmacy techs will spend the majority of their working day standing. And working evenings and weekends is also very common, particularly for newer technicians with low seniority. But the reward for occasional tired and aching feet or sometimes having to work after hours is an extremely rewarding career helping customers with their health and well-being.

This is typically fulfilled in an area Adamsville pharmacy or hospital through an internship program. Students often will have the benefit of working with a seasoned pharmacy tech in order to acquire some real world experience. However the non-clinical portion of the training can be taken over the internet in your Adamsville AL home or via any available computer. This alternative is more practical for many students, especially for those who continue to work while acquiring their certificate or degree. And online colleges are sometimes less expensive than traditional options. Tuition and expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased significantly. With both the clinical and the online training, a complete education is offered. But not all online colleges are accredited, which is critical for obtaining certification and employment (more on accreditation later). So check that any online program you are reviewing is accredited by an acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are dedicated enough to study with a less supervised form of education, then online training might be the best solution for you.

Pharmacist Tech Certifications Offered

Also, many Adamsville AL employers will only employ a technician that is certified. There are 2 organizations that provide certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requirements are that the applicant be at least 18 years old, has graduated from high school, has finished a training program, and has one or more years of professional experience. The PTCB only requires that the candidate has a high school diploma and passes their exam. Recertification is called for every 2 years by both programs, which may be satisfied by performing 20 hours of continuing education.

What to Ask Pharmacy Technician Programs

Questions to ask Adamsville AL pharmacy technician schoolsOnce you have determined whether you would like to attain a degree or a certificate, and if you want to enroll in an online program or go to classes on campus, you can start to narrow your school alternatives. There are many pharmacy tech programs to pick from in the Adamsville AL area and throughout the United States, so you should create a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast community colleges and trade schools. As we covered in our introduction, you will most likely initially look for programs that are within both your financial resources and commuting distance from your Adamsville residence. If you are willing to relocate or are have decided to enroll in an online pharmacy tech school, then location may not be significant. But there are a number of other factors that you need to take into consideration so that you may adequately compare schools. The questions below will assist you in collecting that information and help you to make your ultimate selection.

Is the Pharmacy Technician School Accredited? Most pharmacist tech colleges and vocational schools have acquired a national or regional accreditation. One of the most respected accrediting organizations is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Colleges earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and certified to provide a complete superior education. Online colleges may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals only with distance or online learning. Be sure to confirm that the certificate or degree program together with the college you select are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education sanctioned accrediting organization. Besides helping make sure that you obtain a superior education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Also, certification may require that the program of training is accredited. And many Adamsville AL employers will only hire entry level employees that have graduated from an accredited program.

Does the School Ready You for Certification? Certification is not mandated in all states, but many pharmacies desire that the techs they employ are certified. The pharmacy technician program should prep its students to pass the NHA or the PTCB examination. Students interested in obtaining NHA certification will also need one year of work experience. This condition may be met by entering a school sponsored internship program.

Does the College Sponsor Internship Programs? As we just discussed, the NHA requires one year of job experience for certification, which may be met by means of an internship program. Perhaps the best way to acquire practical clinical experience as a pharmacy tech is to train out in the field. Most pharmacy tech certificate or degree programs also require clinical training prior to graduation and an internship is an excellent way to fulfill the requirement. Find out if the colleges have associations with Adamsville AL area pharmacies, clinics, or hospitals for internship programs.

Does the College Give Job Placement Help? Securing that initial job in Adamsville AL after graduation, particularly with no prior experience, can be a difficult endeavor without some support. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs. If they do, ask what their job placement rates are. A high job placement rate is an indicator that the school has an excellent reputation within the field generating appeal for its graduates. It also signifies that it has a sizable network of pharmacy contacts where it can refer graduating students.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Adamsville AL home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the pharmacy tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the pharmacist technician college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Adamsville AL area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
