The Job of Pharmacy Technicians

Allgood AL pharmacy tech filling prescriptionPharmacy technicians have numerous job functions, but their primary duty is to dispense prescription medications. Since they are not licensed, when filling prescriptions they must operate under the management of a licensed Allgood AL pharmacist. They must also have great customer service skills since they will be interacting directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be precise when filling prescription medications per the pharmacist’s directions. And they must have an extensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terms so that they may assist customers with understanding instructions for their prescriptions in addition to other pharmaceutical information and literature. However, under no situation should they ever give medical advice pertaining to medications or anything else. Any such questions should be handled by the pharmacist. Several of the typical daily tasks a pharmacy tech might perform are:

  • Receive and assist customers with medications and other questions
  • Fill prescription medications under pharmacist direction
  • Input prescription and customer information into pharmacy computer system
  • Contact customers when their medications are prepared for pick-up
  • Fill out and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Stock shelves and audit and manage inventory

Due to the nature of their profession, pharmacy technicians will spend most of their working day standing. And working evenings and weekends is also very common, especially for newer technicians with low seniority. But the reward for occasional tired and aching feet or sometimes having to work off-hours is a very satisfying career helping people with their health and well-being.

Pharmacy Tech Degrees and Certificates

Allgood AL pharmacy techIndividuals wishing to enroll in a pharmacy technician school are qualified as long as they have a high school diploma or equivalent. There are basically 2 alternatives to becoming a technician whether you enroll in a community college or a trade school. The first is to attain a certificate or a diploma, which normally can be completed in a year or less. These programs present an overview to the various aspects of pharmacology and pharmaceutical technology and typically include classroom and lab training. A number of programs also include an internship at {an approved|an accepted Allgood AL pharmacy or other facility. The second option is the Associate Degree program which typically requires about 2 years of studies. Although not required for most entry level positions, it does provide a more in depth education and can lead to more advanced positions or education down the road. Either program can provide the proper level of training to pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam should the graduate choose to become certified.

Pharmacy Tech Schools Online

Allgood AL student attending online pharmacy tech courseBefore choosing a pharmacy tech online program, it’s important to realize that most schools do require a portion of the training be completed in a clinical environment. This is commonly fulfilled in a local Allgood pharmacy or hospital through an internship program. Students often will have the benefit of working under an experienced pharmacy tech in order to receive some work place experience. Fortunately the non-clinical portion of the training can be taken over the internet in your Allgood AL home or via any available computer. This option is more convenient for most students, especially for those who keep working while acquiring their certificate or degree. And online colleges are often less expensive than classroom options. Tuition and expenditures for driving and study materials may be decreased significantly. With both the online and the clinical training, a comprehensive education is provided. But not all online programs are accredited, which is critical for securing employment and certification (more on accreditation later). So confirm that each online program you are considering is accredited by an acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are dedicated enough to study with a less structured form of education, then online training may be the right choice for you.

Pharmacist Technician Certification Options

Certification is not required in every state, but numerous graduates of pharmacy technician programs choose to get certified in order to be more competitive in the job market. Additionally, a number of Allgood AL employers will only employ a tech that has earned certification. There are two organizations that provide certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requirements are that the candidate be at least 18 years old, be a high school graduate, has finished a training program, and has at least one year of professional experience. The PTCB just requires that the candidate has a high school diploma and passes their examination. Recertification is called for every 2 years by each program, which may be satisfied by completing 20 hours of continuing education.

Points to Ask Pharmacy Tech Programs

Questions to ask Allgood AL pharmacy technician schoolsOnce you have determined whether you want to earn a certificate or degree, and if you prefer to enroll in an online college or go to classes on campus, you can start to target your school alternatives. There are many pharmacist technician colleges to select from in the Allgood AL area and throughout the USA, so you should develop a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast colleges and trade schools. As we covered in our introduction, you will undoubtedly first start looking for colleges that are within both your financial budget and commuting distance from your Allgood residence. If you are willing to relocate or are going to enroll in an online pharmacy tech program, then location may not be critical. But there are several other issues that you need to consider so that you may adequately compare schools. The questions below will help you to gather that information and help you to make your final selection.

Is the Pharmacist Tech School Accredited? Many pharmacist technician programs and vocational schools have earned a regional or national accreditation. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Schools earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and certified to offer a complete superior education. Online programs may additionally obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals exclusively with online or distance education. Make sure to check that the degree or certificate program together with the school you select are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education sanctioned accrediting organization. Besides helping ensure that you get a superior education, it might assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Also, certification may mandate that the program of training is accredited. And many Allgood AL employers will only hire entry level employees that have graduated from an accredited program.

Does the College Ready You for Certification? Certification is not required in every state, but many employers desire that the technicians they hire be certified. The pharmacist tech program needs to prep its students to pass the PTCB or the NHA exam. Students planning on obtaining NHA certification will also need 1 year of work experience. This qualification can be fulfilled by participating in a school sponsored internship program.

Does the College Provide Internship Programs? As we previously discussed, the NHA mandates a year of experience for certification, which can be satisfied with an internship program. One of the best ways to get hands on clinical experience as a pharmacy technician is to work out in the field. Most pharmacy tech certificate or degree programs also require clinical training in order to graduate and an internship is an excellent way to fulfill the requirement. Ask if the schools have associations with Allgood AL area pharmacies, clinics, or hospitals for internship programs.

Does the College Provide Job Placement Assistance? Getting that initial job in Allgood AL after graduation, particularly with no experience, can be a challenging endeavor without some support. Find out if the colleges you are reviewing have job placement programs. If so, find out what their job placement rates are. A high job placement rate is an indicator that the college has an excellent reputation within the profession creating appeal for its graduates. It also signifies that it has a substantial network of pharmacy contacts where it can refer graduates.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Allgood AL residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the pharmacist tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the pharmacist technician program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Allgood AL area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

One source said the town's name comes from a family of homesteaders from South Carolina who settled in the area in the early 19th century.[4] However, another states that the original name of the village, Chepultepec, probably named for the Battle of Chapultepec in the Mexican-American War, was changed to "Allgood" in December 1915. A local lime manufacturer believed he was not getting repeat business because of the difficulty in spelling the name of the village and persuaded the local postmaster to change the name, with the postmaster giving the village his own name of Allgood.[5] The town was formally incorporated in 1959. In 2010, it became the first locality in Alabama to achieve a Hispanic plurality.[6]

Allgood is located in south-central Blount County at 33°54′15″N 86°30′59″W / 33.90417°N 86.51639°W / 33.90417; -86.51639 (33.904216, -86.516428).[7] It is in the Murphree Valley, with Straight Mountain to the southeast and Red Mountain and Sand Mountain to the northwest. Alabama State Route 75 passes through the town, leading northeast 3 miles (5 km) to Oneonta, the county seat, and southwest 38 miles (61 km) to Birmingham.

As of the census[11] of 2000, there were 629 people, 189 households, and 140 families residing in the town. The population density was 606.6 people per square mile (233.5/km²). There were 198 housing units at an average density of 190.9 per square mile (73.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 83.94% White, 0.32% Black or African American, 0.48% Native American, 12.08% from other races, and 3.18% from two or more races. 43.40% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
