Usually the initial step is to find schools that offer the certificate or degree that you are interested in. Many prospective students start by looking for schools that are within commuting distance of their home, and then comparing the cost. While cost and location are important factors when selecting a college, they are not the sole ones. Qualifiers such as accreditation and reputation should be evaluated also. And if you prefer attending classes at home in front of your computer instead of in a classroom, then finding an accredited online college will also be included in your vetting process. We will go over these qualifiers and others that you will need to include when reviewing pharmacy technician schools. But to begin with, let’s discuss what a pharmacy tech does, the certificate and degree options available, and the advantages of online courses.

The Role of a Pharmacy Tech

Ariton AL pharmacy tech filling prescriptionPharmacy techs have multiple job functions, but their principal duty is to dispense prescription medicines. Because they are not licensed, when filling prescriptions they must perform under the management of a licensed Ariton AL pharmacist. They must also have great customer service skills since they will be interacting directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be accurate when filling prescription drugs per the pharmacist’s directions. And they need to have a comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terms in order that they may assist customers with understanding directions for their prescriptions as well as other pharmaceutical information and literature. On the other hand, under no circumstance should they ever offer medical advice relating to prescriptions or anything else. All such questions would be handled by the pharmacist. Several of the common daily functions a pharmacy technician may carry out are:

  • Receive and help customers with medications and other questions
  • Dispense prescription medications under pharmacist supervision
  • Add customer and prescription information into pharmacy computer system
  • Contact customers when their medications are ready for pick-up
  • Complete and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Stock shelves and audit and manage inventory

Due to the nature of their job, pharmacy technicians will spend the majority of their working day standing. And working evenings and weekends is also typical, particularly for newer techs with lower seniority. But the payoff for occasional tired and aching feet or at times being required to work after hours is a very rewarding career helping customers with their health and well-being.

These programs offer an introduction to the various elements of pharmacology and pharmaceutical technology and generally include classroom and lab training. Many programs also require an internship at {an approved|an accepted Ariton AL pharmacy or other facility. The second alternative is the Associate Degree program which typically involves about 2 years of studies. Although not required for most entry level positions, it does provide a more comprehensive education and can lead to more advanced positions or education in the future. Each program should furnish the proper amount of training to pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination should the graduate decide to get certified.

Pharmacy Technician Online Classes

Ariton AL student attending online pharmacy tech coursePrior to selecting a pharmacist technician online school, it’s important to understand that the majority of programs do require that a substantial part of the training be conducted in a clinical environment. This is commonly fulfilled in a local Ariton pharmacy or health center by means of an internship program. Students often will have the opportunity to work under an experienced pharmacy tech in order to get some real world experience. Fortunately the non-clinical portion of the training may be taken online in your Ariton AL home or via any available computer. This option is more convenient for many students, especially for those who keep working while earning their degree or certificate. And online programs are often less expensive than classroom options. Tuition and expenditures for driving and study materials may be decreased significantly. With both the clinical and the online training, a complete education is provided. But not all online schools are accredited, which is important for securing certification and employment (more on accreditation later). So verify that any online program you are considering is accredited by an acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are dedicated enough to study with a less formal type of education, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Pharmacy Tech Certifications Available

It is not required to earn certification in all states, but many graduates of pharmacy tech programs opt to get certified in order to be more competitive when seeking employment. Additionally, a number of Ariton AL employers will only employ a tech that has earned certification. There are two organizations that provide certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requirements are that the applicant be 18 years or older, has graduated from high school, has completed a training program, and has one or more years of work experience. The PTCB just requires that the candidate has graduated high school and passes their exam. Recertification is called for every 2 years by each program, which can be satisfied by performing 20 hours of continuing education.

What to Ask Pharmacy Tech Schools

Questions to ask Ariton AL pharmacy technician schoolsAfter you have determined whether you would like to attain a degree or a certificate, and if you prefer to enroll in an online college or go to classes on campus, you can begin to target your school options. There are numerous pharmacy technician programs to choose from in the Ariton AL area and throughout the United States, so you must create a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast colleges and technical schools. As we covered in our introduction, you will undoubtedly first start looking for programs that are within both your financial budget and driving distance from your Ariton residence. If you are willing to move or are have decided to enroll in an online pharmacy tech program, then location may not be significant. But there are many other variables that you must consider so that you may adequately compare schools. The following questions will help you in gathering that information and help you to make your ultimate selection.

Is the Pharmacist Tech School Accredited? Many pharmacy tech colleges and vocational schools have earned a national or regional accreditation. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Colleges earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and verified to furnish a comprehensive quality education. Online programs may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals only with distance or online education. Be sure to check that the degree or certificate program together with the college you pick are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a superior education, it may help in getting financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Also, certification may mandate that the training program is accredited. And many Ariton AL pharmacies will only hire entry level employees that have earned a degree from an accredited school.

Does the School Prepare You for Certification? Certification is not mandated in all states, but numerous pharmacies desire that the technicians they employ be certified. The pharmacist technician program should prepare its students to pass the NHA or the PTCB exam. Students interested in obtaining NHA certification will also need 1 year of professional experience. This requirement can be fulfilled by participating in a school sponsored internship program.

Does the College Sponsor Internship Programs? As we previously covered, the NHA requires one year of job experience for certification, which can be satisfied with an internship program. Perhaps the best way to get hands on clinical experience as a pharmacy technician is to work out in the field. Most pharmacy tech degree or certificate programs also require practical training in order to graduate and an internship is a great way to meet the requirement. Check if the colleges have a working relationship with Ariton AL area pharmacies, clinics, or hospitals for internship programs.

Does the College Provide Job Placement Help? Finding that initial position in Ariton AL after graduation, especially with no professional experience, can be a daunting endeavor without any assistance. Ask if the colleges you are reviewing have job placement programs. If they do, ask what their job placement rates are. A higher job placement rate is an indication that the school has a good reputation within the field generating demand for its graduates. It also means that it has a substantial network of pharmacy relationships where it can place graduates.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Ariton AL residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the pharmacist technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the pharmacy tech program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Ariton AL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
