The Job of Pharmacy Techs

Ashford AL pharmacy tech filling prescriptionPharmacy techs have many job functions, but their principal duty is to dispense prescription medications. Since they are not licensed, when filling prescriptions they must operate under the supervision of a licensed Ashford AL pharmacist. They must also have excellent customer service skills since they will be working directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be accurate when filling prescription medications per the pharmacist’s directions. And they need to have a comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology so that they may assist customers with understanding instructions for their prescriptions as well as other pharmaceutical information and literature. On the other hand, under no circumstance should they ever offer medical advice relating to medications or anything else. Any such questions would be handled by the pharmacist. Some of the regular daily tasks a pharmacy tech may carry out are:

  • Receive and help customers with prescriptions and other questions
  • Prepare prescription medications under pharmacist guidance
  • Add prescription and customer data into pharmacy computer system
  • Contact customers when their prescriptions are ready for pick-up
  • Prepare and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Stock shelves and audit and control inventory

Due to the nature of their job, pharmacy technicians will spend most of their working day standing. And working evenings and weekends is also very common, especially for newer techs with lower seniority. But the payoff for occasional tired and aching feet or sometimes having to work after hours is a very gratifying career helping people with their health and wellness.

These programs offer an overview to the different facets of pharmacology and pharmaceutical technology and generally include classroom and lab training. Numerous programs also include an internship at {an approved|an accepted Ashford AL pharmacy or similar facility. The second option is the Associate Degree program which generally requires about two years of studies. Pharmacist Tech Colleges Online

Ashford AL student attending online pharmacy tech coursePrior to choosing a pharmacist tech online college, it’s important to realize that the majority of programs do require that a substantial part of the training be carried out in a clinical setting. This is usually fulfilled in an area Ashford pharmacy or hospital through an internship program. Students in most cases will have the benefit of working under a seasoned pharmacy technician so as to receive some real world experience. However the non-clinical portion of the training may be accessed online in your Ashford AL home or via any available computer. This alternative is more accommodating for many students, particularly for those who continue to work while earning their certificate or degree. And online programs are often more affordable than classroom options. Tuition and expenditures for commuting and course materials may be reduced significantly. With both the online and the clinical training, a comprehensive education is offered. But not all online colleges are accredited, which is important for obtaining certification and employment (more on accreditation later). So check that each online college you are considering is accredited by an acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are disciplined enough to learn with a less structured form of education, then online classes might be the right solution for you.

Pharmacist Technician Certifications Available

It is not required to earn certification in every state, but many graduates of pharmacy technician schools choose to get certified so as to be more competitive when seeking employment. Also, a number of Ashford AL employers will only hire a tech that has earned certification. There are 2 organizations that offer certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requires that the candidate be 18 years or older, has graduated from high school, has finished a training program, and has at least one year of professional experience. The PTCB only requires that the candidate has graduated high school and passes their exam. Recertification is mandated every two years by both programs, which may be satisfied by completing 20 hours of continuing education.

Questions to Ask Pharmacist Tech Colleges

There are many pharmacy tech schools to select from in the Ashford AL area and throughout the Country, so you should create a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast colleges and trade schools. As we discussed in our introduction, you will most likely first start looking for programs that are within both your financial resources and driving distance from your Ashford residence. If you are willing to relocate or are going to enroll in an online pharmacy tech college, then location may not be significant. But there are several other variables that you should consider so that you may properly compare schools. The questions below will assist you in collecting that information and help you to make your ultimate decision.

Is the Pharmacy Technician College Accredited? Many pharmacist technician programs and vocational schools have obtained a national or regional accreditation. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Colleges earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and verified to furnish a complete quality education. Online programs may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals exclusively with online or distance education. Make sure to check that the certificate or degree program together with the college you pick are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization. Along with helping make sure that you obtain a superior education, it can help in getting financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Also, certification may require that the program of training is accredited. And many Ashford AL employers will only hire entry level employees that have earned a degree from an accredited school.

Does the College Prepare You for Certification? Certification is not mandated in all states, but a number of pharmacies desire that the technicians they employ are certified. The pharmacist technician school should ready its students to pass the NHA or the PTCB examination. Students interested in obtaining NHA certification will also need 1 year of professional experience. This qualification may be satisfied by entering a school sponsored internship program.

Does the School Offer Internship Programs? As we just discussed, the NHA requires one year of experience for certification, which can be fulfilled through an internship program. One of the best ways to get hands on clinical experience as a pharmacy tech is to work out in the field. Most pharmacy technician certificate or degree programs also require clinical training prior to graduation and an internship is a great way to meet the requirement. Check if the colleges have associations with Ashford AL area pharmacies, hospitals, or clinics for internship programs.

Does the College Offer Job Placement Help? Securing that first job in Ashford AL after graduation, particularly with no experience, can be a challenging endeavor without any help. Ask if the colleges you are considering have job placement programs. If they do, ask what their job placement rates are. A higher job placement rate is an indication that the college has an excellent reputation within the profession creating appeal for its graduates. It also signifies that it has a substantial network of pharmacy contacts where it can place graduates.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Ashford AL residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the pharmacist tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the pharmacy tech school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Ashford AL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
