Beatrice AL student attending online pharmacy tech coursePrior to deciding on a pharmacy technician online school, it’s necessary to realize that the majority of schools do require that a substantial part of the training be conducted in a clinical setting. This is typically satisfied in a local Beatrice pharmacy or hospital through an internship program. Students in most cases will have the opportunity to work under an experienced pharmacy tech so as to acquire some work place experience. However the balance or non-clinical training can be accessed online in your Beatrice AL home or via any available computer. This alternative is more convenient for many students, notably for those who keep working while acquiring their certificate or degree. And online programs are often less expensive than classroom options. Tuition and costs for driving and course materials may be reduced substantially. With both the online and the clinical training, a complete education is provided. But not all online programs are accredited, which is critical for obtaining employment and certification (more on accreditation later). So check that any online school you are looking at is accredited by a recognized accrediting organization, for instance the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are disciplined enough to learn with a less structured form of education, then online training may be the best choice for you.

Pharmacist Technician Certifications Offered

Also, many Beatrice AL pharmacies will only hire a technician that is certified. There are two organizations that provide certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requires that the applicant be at least 18 years old, be a high school graduate, has completed a training program, and has at least one year of professional experience. The PTCB only requires that the candidate has a high school diploma and passes their exam. Recertification is mandated every two years by each program, which may be satisfied by performing 20 hours of continuing education.

Questions to Ask Pharmacy Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Beatrice AL pharmacy technician schoolsOnce you have decided whether you would like to obtain a certificate or degree, and if you want to enroll in an online program or attend classes on campus, you can begin to target your school options. There are many pharmacy tech colleges to select from in the Beatrice AL area and throughout the USA, so you must create a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast community colleges and technical schools. As we addressed in our introduction, you will undoubtedly initially look for programs that are within both your financial budget and driving distance from your Beatrice home. If you are willing to move or are going to enroll in an online pharmacy tech program, then location may not be critical. But there are many other factors that you need to consider so that you may properly compare programs. The following questions will assist you in collecting that information and help you to make your final choice.

Is the Pharmacist Tech School Accredited? Many pharmacist technician colleges and vocational schools have obtained a national or regional accreditation. One of the most respected accrediting organizations is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Programs earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and verified to furnish a complete superior education. Online schools may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals solely with distance or online learning. Don’t forget to verify that the degree or certificate program together with the school you pick are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization. Besides helping guarantee that you receive a superior education, it may help in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Also, certification may require that the program of training is accredited. And many Beatrice AL pharmacies will only hire entry level employees that have graduated from an accredited program.

Does the School Ready You for Certification? Certification is not mandated in every state, but a number of pharmacies prefer that the techs they hire are certified. The pharmacist technician program needs to ready its students to pass the NHA or the PTCB examination. Students planning on obtaining NHA certification will also need one year of work experience. This condition can be satisfied by participating in a college sponsored internship program.

Does the School Offer Internship Programs? As we previously discussed, the NHA requires one year of professional experience for certification, which can be satisfied by means of an internship program. One of the best ways to acquire practical clinical experience as a pharmacy tech is to train out in the field. Most pharmacy technician degree or certificate programs also require clinical training in order to graduate and an internship is an excellent way to meet the requirement. Ask if the colleges have a working relationship with Beatrice AL area pharmacies, hospitals, or clinics for internship programs.

Does the School Give Job Placement Help? Getting that initial job in Beatrice AL upon graduation, particularly with no prior experience, can be a daunting task without any assistance. Find out if the schools you are considering have job placement programs. If so, ask what their job placement rates are. A high job placement rate is an indicator that the college has a good reputation within the profession creating demand for its graduates. It also signifies that it has a sizable network of employer relationships where it can refer graduating students.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Beatrice AL residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the pharmacy tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the pharmacist tech college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Beatrice AL area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
