And they must have a comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology in order that they can help customers with understanding directions for their prescriptions in addition to other pharmaceutical information and literature. On the other hand, under no circumstance should they ever give medical advice relating to prescriptions or anything else. All such questions should be directed to the pharmacist. A few of the common daily tasks a pharmacy tech may carry out are:

  • Greet and assist customers with medications and other questions
  • Prepare prescription medications under pharmacist supervision
  • Enter prescription and customer data into pharmacy computer system
  • Contact customers when their medications are ready for pick-up

Pharmacist Tech Online Programs

Cardiff AL student attending online pharmacy tech coursePrior to deciding on a pharmacist technician online training program, it’s necessary to understand that most programs do require that a substantial part of the training be completed in a clinical environment. This is usually fulfilled in a local Cardiff pharmacy or hospital through an internship program. Students in most cases will have the opportunity to work under a seasoned pharmacy technician so as to acquire some real world experience. However the non-clinical portion of the training can be accessed online in your Cardiff AL home or via any available computer. This option is more convenient for most students, particularly for those who continue to work while earning their degree or certificate. And online colleges are sometimes less expensive than traditional options. Tuition and costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced substantially. With both the clinical and the online training, a complete education is provided. But not all online schools are accredited, which is important for obtaining employment and certification (more on accreditation later). So verify that each online school you are considering is accredited by a recognized accrediting organization, for example the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are disciplined enough to study with a less formal type of education, then online classes might be the best option for you.

Pharmacy Technician Certification Choices

It is not required to earn certification in all states, but numerous graduates of pharmacy technician colleges elect to get certified so as to be more competitive when seeking employment. Additionally, many Cardiff AL employers will only hire a technician that has earned certification. There are two organizations that offer certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requires that the candidate be 18 years or older, has graduated from high school, has finished a training program, and has one or more years of professional experience. The PTCB just requires that the applicant has graduated high school and passes their examination. Recertification is required every 2 years by both programs, which may be satisfied by completing 20 hours of continuing education.

Points to Ask Pharmacist Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Cardiff AL pharmacy technician schoolsAfter you have decided whether you would like to attain a certificate or degree, and if you prefer to enroll in an online program or attend classes on campus, you can begin to target your school options. There are a large number of pharmacist technician programs to choose from in the Cardiff AL area and throughout the Country, so you must develop a list of qualifying questions so that you can compare colleges and vocational schools. As we discussed in our introduction, you will undoubtedly first start looking for colleges that are within both your financial budget and driving distance from your Cardiff residence. If you are able to relocate or are going to enroll in an online pharmacy tech college, then location may not be important. But there are several other variables that you must take into consideration so that you may effectively compare programs. The following questions will help you in collecting that information and help you to make your ultimate selection.

Is the Pharmacy Tech College Accredited? Many pharmacist tech colleges and trade schools have acquired a national or regional accreditation. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Schools earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and certified to provide a comprehensive quality education. Online schools may additionally receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals only with distance or online education. Don’t forget to check that the certificate or degree program together with the school you pick are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization. In addition to helping make sure that you receive a quality education, it may assist in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Also, certification may mandate that the program of training is accredited. And a number of Cardiff AL employers will only hire entry level employees that have earned a degree from an accredited school.

Does the College Prepare You for Certification? Certification is not required in every state, but many employers prefer that the technicians they hire are certified. The pharmacy tech program needs to prepare its students to pass the PTCB or the NHA exam. Students interested in obtaining NHA certification will additionally need one year of work experience. This qualification may be satisfied by participating in a school sponsored internship program.

Does the College Offer Internship Programs? As we previously covered, the NHA mandates a year of experience for certification, which can be fulfilled by means of an internship program. One of the best ways to obtain practical clinical experience as a pharmacy technician is to train out in the field. Most pharmacy technician certificate or degree programs also require practical training in order to graduate and an internship is a great way to meet the requirement. Check if the schools have a working relationship with Cardiff AL area pharmacies, clinics, or hospitals for internship programs.

Does the School Give Job Placement Help? Securing that initial position in Cardiff AL upon graduation, particularly with no experience, can be a difficult undertaking without some assistance. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs. If so, find out what their job placement rates are. A high job placement rate is an indicator that the college has an excellent reputation within the profession generating demand for its graduates. It also indicates that it has a substantial network of employer relationships where it can place graduating students.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Cardiff AL home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the pharmacy technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the pharmacist tech program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Cardiff AL area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
