The Duties of Pharmacy Technicians

Chelsea AL pharmacy tech filling prescriptionPharmacy technicians have multiple job responsibilities, but their main responsibility is to dispense prescription medicines. Because they are not licensed, when filling prescriptions they must operate under the supervision of a licensed Chelsea AL pharmacist. They must also have great customer service skills because they will be interacting directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be precise when preparing prescription medications per the pharmacist’s instructions. And they need to have an extensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terms so that they can help customers with understanding instructions for their medications in addition to other pharmaceutical literature and information. However, under no circumstance should they ever give medical advice pertaining to prescriptions or anything else. All such questions would be handled by the pharmacist. Several of the common daily functions a pharmacy tech might perform are:

  • Welcome and assist customers with prescriptions and other questions
  • Fill prescription medicines under pharmacist guidance
  • Enter prescription and customer data into pharmacy computer system
  • Contact customers when their prescriptions are ready for pick-up
  • Fill out and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Stock shelves and monitor and control inventory

As a consequence of their profession, pharmacy technicians will spend most of their working day on their feet. And working evenings and weekends is also typical, especially for newer techs with lower seniority. But the payoff for occasional tired and aching feet or at times having to work after hours is an extremely gratifying career helping customers with their health and well-being.

Pharmacist Technician Online Colleges

Chelsea AL student attending online pharmacy tech courseBefore selecting a pharmacy tech online school, it’s important to realize that most programs do require a portion of the training be carried out in a clinical environment. This is commonly fulfilled in a local Chelsea pharmacy or health center through an internship program. Students in most cases will have the opportunity to work under a seasoned pharmacy technician in order to obtain some work place experience. However the balance or non-clinical training can be taken over the internet in your Chelsea AL home or via any available computer. This alternative is more accommodating for many students, notably for those who continue to work while acquiring their certificate or degree. And online programs are often less expensive than classroom options. Tuition and expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased significantly. With both the clinical and the online training, a comprehensive education is offered. But not all online schools are accredited, which is essential for securing certification and employment (more on accreditation later). So confirm that any online school you are considering is accredited by a recognized accrediting agency, such as the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are disciplined enough to learn with a less supervised form of education, then online training may be the ideal solution for you.

Also, a number of Chelsea AL employers will only hire a tech that is certified. There are two organizations that provide certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requires that the candidate be at least 18 years old, be a high school graduate, has finished a training program, and has one or more years of professional experience. The PTCB only requires that the applicant has a high school diploma and passes their exam. Recertification is mandated every two years by each program, which may be satisfied by performing 20 hours of continuing education.

Questions to Ask Pharmacist Technician Schools

Questions to ask Chelsea AL pharmacy technician schoolsAfter you have determined whether you want to earn a degree or a certificate, and if you want to enroll in an online school or attend classes on campus, you can start to target your school alternatives. There are numerous pharmacy tech schools to choose from in the Chelsea AL area and throughout the USA, so you should create a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast colleges and technical schools. As we discussed in our introduction, you will probably initially look for programs that are within both your financial budget and driving distance from your Chelsea home. If you are willing to relocate or are have decided to enroll in an online pharmacy tech college, then location may not be significant. But there are a number of other issues that you should consider in order to properly compare programs. The following questions will help you in collecting that information and help you to make your final selection.

Is the Pharmacist Technician College Accredited? Many pharmacy tech colleges and vocational schools have obtained a regional or national accreditation. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Schools earning accreditation from the ASHP have been screened and verified to offer a comprehensive superior education. Online programs may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals only with distance or online education. Make sure to check that the degree or certificate program in addition to the college you select are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education sanctioned accrediting agency. Besides helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, it can assist in getting financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Also, certification might require that the training program is accredited. And a number of Chelsea AL employers will only hire entry level employees that have graduated from an accredited program.

Does the Program Prep You for Certification? Certification is not mandated in all states, but many pharmacies desire that the technicians they employ be certified. The pharmacy tech program should prep its students to pass the NHA or the PTCB examination. Students planning on obtaining NHA certification will additionally need 1 year of professional experience. This qualification can be met by taking part in a school sponsored internship program.

Does the College Sponsor Internship Programs? As we previously discussed, the NHA mandates a year of professional experience for certification, which may be fulfilled with an internship program. Perhaps the best way to obtain practical clinical experience as a pharmacy tech is to train out in the field. Most pharmacy tech degree or certificate programs also require practical training prior to graduation and an internship is an excellent way to satisfy the requirement. Ask if the colleges have associations with Chelsea AL area pharmacies, clinics, or hospitals for internship programs.

Does the School Offer Job Placement Assistance? Getting that first job in Chelsea AL after graduation, particularly with no prior experience, can be a daunting task without some assistance. Find out if the schools you are looking at have job assistance programs. If so, ask what their job placement rates are. A high job placement rate is an indicator that the school has an excellent reputation within the profession generating appeal for its graduates. It also indicates that it has a substantial network of employer relationships where it can refer graduates.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Chelsea AL home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the pharmacy tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the pharmacist tech college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Chelsea AL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
