The Responsibilities of a Pharmacy Tech

Clio AL pharmacy tech filling prescriptionPharmacy technicians have various job responsibilities, but their main responsibility is to dispense prescription medications. Since they are not licensed, when dispensing prescriptions they must work under the supervision of a licensed Clio AL pharmacist. They must also have excellent customer service abilities since they will be working directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be precise when filling prescription drugs per the pharmacist’s instructions. And they must have an in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical terms in order that they can assist customers with understanding instructions for their prescriptions as well as other pharmaceutical information and literature. On the other hand, under no circumstance should they ever give medical advice concerning medications or anything else. Any such questions should be addressed by the pharmacist. Several of the common daily functions a pharmacy tech may perform are:

  • Welcome and help customers with medications and other questions
  • Dispense prescription drugs under pharmacist guidance
  • Enter prescription and customer data into pharmacy computer system
  • Contact customers when their medications are prepared for pick-up
  • Prepare and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Stock shelves and audit and control inventory

As a consequence of their job, pharmacy technicians will spend most of their working day standing. And working weekends and evenings is also very common, particularly for newer techs with low seniority. But the payoff for occasional tired and aching feet or at times being required to work after hours is a very fulfilling career helping people with their health and wellness.

Each program should provide the proper level of training to pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination should the graduate decide to get certified.

Pharmacist Technician Programs Online

Clio AL student attending online pharmacy tech coursePrior to choosing a pharmacist technician online college, it’s necessary to realize that most programs do require that a substantial part of the training be carried out in a clinical environment. This is usually fulfilled in an area Clio pharmacy or hospital through an internship program. Students in most cases will have the opportunity to work with an experienced pharmacy technician so as to obtain some work place experience. Fortunately the non-clinical portion of the training may be taken over the internet in your Clio AL home or via any available computer. This option is more accommodating for most students, particularly for those who continue to work while acquiring their degree or certificate. And online schools are often more affordable than traditional options. Tuition and expenses for commuting and course materials may be reduced substantially. With both the clinical and the online training, a complete education is offered. But not all online colleges are accredited, which is important for obtaining employment and certification (more on accreditation later). So check that each online school you are looking at is accredited by an acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are disciplined enough to study with a less supervised form of education, then online classes might be the best option for you.

Pharmacy Technician Certification Options

It is not required to earn certification in every state, but numerous graduates of pharmacy tech programs choose to become certified in order to be more qualified in the job market. Also, many Clio AL pharmacies will only employ a technician that has earned certification. There are 2 organizations that offer certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requires that the candidate be at least 18 years old, be a high school graduate, has finished a training program, and has one or more years of work experience. The PTCB just requires that the candidate has graduated high school and passes their exam. Recertification is called for every two years by both programs, which may be satisfied by performing 20 hours of continuing education.

What to Ask Pharmacy Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Clio AL pharmacy technician schoolsOnce you have determined whether you would like to obtain a certificate or degree, and if you want to enroll in an online school or attend classes on campus, you can start to narrow your school options. There are many pharmacy technician schools to choose from in the Clio AL area and throughout the Country, so you must develop a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast colleges and vocational schools. As we discussed in our introduction, you will probably first start looking for programs that are within both your financial budget and commuting distance from your Clio home. If you are able to relocate or are going to enroll in an online pharmacy tech program, then location may not be critical. But there are a number of other issues that you must consider in order to adequately compare colleges. The questions below will help you in gathering that information and help you to make your final selection.

Is the Pharmacy Technician Program Accredited? The majority of pharmacy technician programs and trade schools have acquired a national or regional accreditation. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Colleges earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and verified to furnish a complete superior education. Online programs may additionally receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals only with distance or online learning. Don’t forget to confirm that the certificate or degree program together with the school you pick are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization. Along with helping make sure that you obtain a superior education, it might help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, certification may mandate that the training program is accredited. And a number of Clio AL pharmacies will only hire entry level employees that have earned a degree from an accredited school.

Does the College Prepare You for Certification? Certification is not mandated in every state, but many employers prefer that the techs they hire be certified. The pharmacy technician program needs to prep its students to pass the NHA or the PTCB examination. Students interested in obtaining NHA certification will also need 1 year of job experience. This condition can be fulfilled by participating in a college sponsored internship program.

Does the College Sponsor Internship Programs? As we previously discussed, the NHA mandates 1 year of professional experience for certification, which may be satisfied by means of an internship program. Perhaps the best way to obtain practical clinical experience as a pharmacy tech is to work out in the field. Most pharmacy technician degree or certificate programs also require practical training prior to graduation and an internship is an excellent way to satisfy the requirement. Ask if the schools have a working relationship with Clio AL area pharmacies, hospitals, or clinics for internship programs.

Does the College Offer Job Placement Assistance? Finding that initial position in Clio AL after graduation, particularly with no experience, can be a challenging endeavor without any support. Ask if the colleges you are considering have job placement programs. If so, ask what their job placement rates are. A higher job placement rate is an indication that the school has an excellent reputation within the profession creating demand for its graduates. It also indicates that it has a large network of pharmacy contacts where it can place graduating students.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Clio AL home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the pharmacist tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the pharmacy technician program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Clio AL area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
