Because they are not licensed, when dispensing prescriptions they must operate under the supervision of a licensed Coaling AL pharmacist. They must also have excellent customer service abilities since they will be interacting directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be absolute when filling prescription medications per the pharmacist’s directions. And they need to have a comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology so that they can help customers with understanding directions for their prescriptions in addition to other pharmaceutical literature and information. On the other hand, under no circumstance should they ever give medical advice concerning prescriptions or anything else. All such questions would be directed to the pharmacist. Several of the typical daily tasks a pharmacy technician might carry out are:

  • Greet and assist customers with prescriptions and other questions
  • Fill prescription medications under pharmacist direction
  • Input customer and prescription information into pharmacy computer system
  • Contact customers when their prescriptions are ready for pick-up
  • Prepare and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Stock shelves and audit and control inventory

Due to the nature of their job, pharmacy technicians will spend the majority of their working day on their feet. And working weekends and evenings is also typical, especially for newer techs with lower seniority. But the reward for occasional tired and aching feet or at times having to work after hours is a very fulfilling career assisting people with their health and wellness.

This is typically satisfied in an area Coaling pharmacy or health center through an internship program. Students in most cases will have the opportunity to work with an experienced pharmacy tech in order to acquire some real world experience. However the non-clinical portion of the training can be taken over the internet in your Coaling AL home or via any available computer. This option is more convenient for most students, especially for those who keep working while acquiring their certificate or degree. And online programs are often less expensive than traditional options. Tuition and expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced substantially. With both the online and the clinical training, a complete education is provided. But not all online colleges are accredited, which is critical for obtaining certification and employment (more on accreditation later). So confirm that any online school you are reviewing is accredited by a recognized accrediting agency, such as the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are dedicated enough to learn with a less formal type of education, then online training might be the right solution for you.

Pharmacy Tech Certification Choices

Also, a number of Coaling AL employers will only hire a tech that is certified. There are 2 organizations that offer certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requires that the candidate be at least 18 years old, has graduated from high school, has completed a training program, and has one or more years of work experience. The PTCB only requires that the candidate has graduated high school and passes their exam. Recertification is mandated every two years by each program, which may be satisfied by performing 20 hours of continuing education.

Points to Ask Pharmacy Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Coaling AL pharmacy technician schoolsAfter you have determined whether you want to attain a degree or a certificate, and if you prefer to enroll in an online college or go to classes on campus, you can begin to target your school options. There are numerous pharmacy technician schools to pick from in the Coaling AL area and throughout the USA, so you should create a list of qualifying questions so that you can compare colleges and trade schools. As we covered in our introduction, you will undoubtedly initially look for programs that are within both your financial budget and driving distance from your Coaling residence. If you are willing to relocate or are going to enroll in an online pharmacy tech college, then location may not be important. But there are many other factors that you need to consider in order to adequately compare programs. The following questions will help you in gathering that information and help you to make your final choice.

Is the Pharmacist Technician College Accredited? The majority of pharmacy tech programs and trade schools have acquired a regional or national accreditation. One of the most respected accrediting organizations is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Colleges earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and verified to provide a comprehensive superior education. Online colleges may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals exclusively with distance or online learning. Make sure to check that the certificate or degree program as well as the college you pick are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education sanctioned accrediting organization. Besides helping guarantee that you obtain a quality education, it might assist in getting financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Also, certification might mandate that the program of training is accredited. And a number of Coaling AL pharmacies will only hire entry level employees that have earned a degree from an accredited school.

Does the College Prepare You for Certification? Certification is not required in every state, but numerous employers desire that the technicians they employ are certified. The pharmacy tech program should ready its students to pass the PTCB or the NHA examination. Students interested in obtaining NHA certification will additionally need one year of job experience. This requirement can be fulfilled by taking part in a school sponsored internship program.

Does the School Provide Internship Programs? As we previously covered, the NHA mandates a year of job experience for certification, which may be met with an internship program. Perhaps the best way to obtain hands on clinical experience as a pharmacy tech is to work out in the field. Most pharmacy tech degree or certificate programs also require practical training prior to graduation and an internship is a great way to satisfy the requirement. Ask if the colleges have associations with Coaling AL area pharmacies, clinics, or hospitals for internship programs.

Does the College Offer Job Placement Help? Finding that initial job in Coaling AL after graduation, particularly with no professional experience, can be a difficult task without any assistance. Find out if the colleges you are looking at have job assistance programs. If they do, ask what their job placement rates are. A higher job placement rate is an indicator that the college has a good reputation within the profession generating appeal for its graduates. It also means that it has a sizable network of pharmacy relationships where it can place graduating students.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Coaling AL home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the pharmacy technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the pharmacist technician school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Coaling AL area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
