Because they are not licensed, when dispensing prescriptions they must operate under the management of a licensed Ambler AK pharmacist. They must also have excellent customer service skills because they will be interacting directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be precise when filling prescription medications per the pharmacist’s directions. And they need to have a comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology in order that they can help customers with understanding directions for their prescriptions in addition to other pharmaceutical literature and information. On the other hand, under no circumstance should they ever offer medical advice pertaining to medications or anything else. Any such questions should be handled by the pharmacist. Several of the typical daily tasks a pharmacy tech may perform are:

  • Greet and assist customers with medications and other questions
  • Fill prescription medicines under pharmacist supervision
  • Add prescription and customer information into pharmacy computer system
  • Phone customers when their prescriptions are ready for pick-up
  • Prepare and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Stock shelves and audit and manage inventory

As a consequence of their job, pharmacy techs will spend most of their working day standing. And working evenings and weekends is also typical, particularly for newer techs with lower seniority. But the payoff for occasional tired and aching feet or sometimes having to work off-hours is a very rewarding career assisting customers with their health and wellness.

Pharmacist Technician Classes Online

Ambler AK student attending online pharmacy tech courseBefore selecting a pharmacy technician online training program, it’s necessary to understand that the majority of schools do require that a substantial part of the training be carried out in a clinical setting. This is commonly satisfied in a local Ambler pharmacy or hospital by means of an internship program. Students often will have the benefit of working with an experienced pharmacy tech in order to get some real world experience. However the non-clinical portion of the training may be accessed over the internet in your Ambler AK home or via any available computer. This option is more practical for most students, especially for those who keep working while attaining their certificate or degree. And online colleges are often less expensive than traditional options. Tuition and expenditures for commuting and course materials can be decreased substantially. With both the online and the clinical training, a complete education is offered. But not all online schools are accredited, which is essential for obtaining certification and employment (more on accreditation later). So confirm that any online school you are looking at is accredited by a recognized accrediting organization, for example the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are disciplined enough to learn with a less supervised form of education, then online training might be the best choice for you.

Pharmacy Tech Certifications Available

Certification is not required in every state, but numerous graduates of pharmacy tech programs opt to become certified so as to be more competitive in the job market. Additionally, a number of Ambler AK employers will only employ a technician that has earned certification. There are two organizations that provide certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requires that the candidate be at least 18 years old, be a high school graduate, has completed a training program, and has at least one year of professional experience. The PTCB just requires that the applicant has a high school diploma and passes their examination. Recertification is required every two years by both programs, which may be met by performing 20 hours of continuing education.

If you are able to relocate or are have decided to enroll in an online pharmacy tech school, then location may not be critical. But there are a number of other factors that you must take into consideration in order to adequately compare colleges. The questions below will help you in gathering that information and help you to make your final decision.

Is the Pharmacist Tech College Accredited? Many pharmacist tech programs and trade schools have earned a national or regional accreditation. One of the most respected accrediting agencies is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Programs earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and verified to provide a comprehensive superior education. Online colleges may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals only with online or distance education. Don’t forget to confirm that the degree or certificate program together with the school you choose are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive a superior education, it might help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Also, certification may mandate that the training program is accredited. And a number of Ambler AK employers will only hire entry level employees that have earned a degree from an accredited school.

Does the Program Ready You for Certification? Certification is not required in every state, but many pharmacies desire that the technicians they hire be certified. The pharmacist technician program needs to prepare its students to pass the PTCB or the NHA exam. Students interested in obtaining NHA certification will also need 1 year of professional experience. This requirement can be fulfilled by participating in a college sponsored internship program.

Does the School Offer Internship Programs? As we previously discussed, the NHA mandates 1 year of experience for certification, which may be fulfilled through an internship program. One of the best ways to acquire hands on clinical experience as a pharmacy tech is to work out in the field. Most pharmacy technician certificate or degree programs also require clinical training in order to graduate and an internship is a great way to satisfy the requirement. Find out if the schools have a working relationship with Ambler AK area pharmacies, hospitals, or clinics for internship programs.

Does the School Give Job Placement Help? Finding that first job in Ambler AK upon graduation, particularly with no prior experience, can be a challenging endeavor without some assistance. Find out if the colleges you are researching have job assistance programs. If so, ask what their job placement rates are. A higher job placement rate is an indication that the school has an excellent reputation within the profession generating appeal for its graduates. It also signifies that it has a sizable network of employer contacts where it can refer graduates.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Ambler AK home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the pharmacy tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the pharmacy technician college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Ambler AK area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
