Because they are not licensed, when dispensing prescriptions they must perform under the supervision of a licensed Kasilof AK pharmacist. They must also have great customer service skills since they will be working directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be precise when filling prescription drugs per the pharmacist’s directions. And they must have an extensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terms in order that they can assist customers with understanding directions for their medications in addition to other pharmaceutical information and literature. However, under no circumstance should they ever give medical advice relating to medications or anything else. All such questions would be addressed by the pharmacist. Some of the common daily tasks a pharmacy technician might carry out are:

  • Receive and assist customers with medications and other questions
  • Prepare prescription medicines under pharmacist supervision
  • Input customer and prescription data into pharmacy computer system
  • Contact customers when their medications are ready for pick-up
  • Fill out and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Re-supply shelves and monitor and manage inventory

Due to the nature of their profession, pharmacy techs will spend most of their working day on their feet. And working evenings and weekends is also typical, especially for newer techs with low seniority. But the reward for occasional tired and aching feet or occasionally having to work off-hours is an extremely satisfying career assisting customers with their health and wellness.

This is commonly fulfilled in a local Kasilof pharmacy or health center by means of an internship program. Students often will have the benefit of working with a seasoned pharmacy technician so as to acquire some work place experience. Fortunately the non-clinical portion of the training can be taken over the internet in your Kasilof AK home or via any available computer. This option is more accommodating for many students, especially for those who keep working while attaining their certificate or degree. And online programs are often more affordable than classroom options. Tuition and expenses for driving and study materials can be decreased significantly. With both the clinical and the online training, a complete education is offered. But not all online colleges are accredited, which is important for obtaining employment and certification (more on accreditation later). So confirm that each online college you are considering is accredited by a recognized accrediting agency, for instance the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are disciplined enough to study with a less formal type of education, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

Pharmacist Technician Certification Choices

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requirements are that the candidate be 18 years or older, be a high school graduate, has completed a training program, and has at least one year of work experience. The PTCB only requires that the candidate has a high school diploma and passes their exam. Recertification is called for every two years by each program, which may be satisfied by completing 20 hours of continuing education.

What to Ask Pharmacy Technician Schools

Questions to ask Kasilof AK pharmacy technician schoolsOnce you have decided whether you wish to obtain a certificate or degree, and if you prefer to enroll in an online program or go to classes on campus, you can start to narrow your school options. There are many pharmacist technician schools to select from in the Kasilof AK area and throughout the USA, so you should develop a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast colleges and vocational schools. As we discussed in our introduction, you will most likely initially look for schools that are within both your financial budget and commuting distance from your Kasilof home. If you are willing to move or are have decided to enroll in an online pharmacy tech school, then location may not be significant. But there are many other issues that you need to take into consideration so that you may effectively compare colleges. The following questions will assist you in collecting that information and help you to make your final choice.

Is the Pharmacist Technician College Accredited? The majority of pharmacy technician colleges and vocational schools have acquired a regional or national accreditation. Among the most respected accrediting agencies is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Colleges earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and certified to offer a complete quality education. Online programs may additionally obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals exclusively with online or distance education. Make sure to confirm that the certificate or degree program together with the school you select are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization. Besides helping guarantee that you get a superior education, it might assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Also, certification might require that the training program is accredited. And many Kasilof AK pharmacies will only hire entry level employees that have graduated from an accredited program.

Does the College Ready You for Certification? Certification is not required in all states, but a number of pharmacies prefer that the techs they employ are certified. The pharmacy technician college should prep its students to pass the PTCB or the NHA exam. Students planning on obtaining NHA certification will also need one year of work experience. This requirement may be met by entering a school sponsored internship program.

Does the School Provide Internship Programs? As we previously covered, the NHA requires one year of professional experience for certification, which may be satisfied through an internship program. Perhaps the best way to get hands on clinical experience as a pharmacy tech is to work out in the field. Most pharmacy technician certificate or degree programs also require clinical training in order to graduate and an internship is an excellent way to satisfy the requirement. Check if the programs have associations with Kasilof AK area pharmacies, clinics, or hospitals for internship programs.

Does the College Give Job Placement Help? Finding that first position in Kasilof AK after graduation, especially with no professional experience, can be a daunting endeavor without any help. Find out if the schools you are looking at have job placement programs. If so, ask what their job placement rates are. A higher job placement rate is an indication that the school has an excellent reputation within the field creating demand for its graduates. It also means that it has a substantial network of pharmacy relationships where it can refer graduating students.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Kasilof AK residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the pharmacy tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the pharmacy technician school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Kasilof AK area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
