Since they are not licensed, when filling prescriptions they must operate under the supervision of a licensed Kwethluk AK pharmacist. They must also have great customer service skills since they will be interacting directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be absolute when filling prescription drugs per the pharmacist’s instructions. And they need to have a comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology so that they can assist customers with understanding instructions for their medications in addition to other pharmaceutical information and literature. On the other hand, under no situation should they ever give medical advice regarding prescriptions or anything else. All such questions should be addressed by the pharmacist. Several of the regular daily services a pharmacy technician might perform are:

  • Greet and assist customers with prescriptions and other questions
  • Fill prescription medicines under pharmacist supervision
  • Add prescription and customer data into pharmacy computer system
  • Contact customers when their medications are ready for pick-up
  • Prepare and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Re-supply shelves and monitor and control inventory

Due to the nature of their job, pharmacy techs will spend most of their working day on their feet. And working evenings and weekends is also very common, especially for newer techs with low seniority. But the payoff for occasional tired and aching feet or occasionally having to work after hours is a very gratifying career helping customers with their health and well-being.

Pharmacist Tech Colleges Online

Kwethluk AK student attending online pharmacy tech courseBefore choosing a pharmacist technician online school, it’s important to realize that the majority of programs do require that a substantial part of the training be conducted in a clinical environment. This is commonly satisfied in a local Kwethluk pharmacy or health center through an internship program. Students often will have the benefit of working under a seasoned pharmacy technician in order to acquire some real world experience. However the non-clinical portion of the training may be accessed over the internet in your Kwethluk AK home or via any available computer. This alternative is more practical for many students, especially for those who keep working while earning their degree or certificate. And online schools are often more affordable than classroom options. Tuition and expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced significantly. With both the online and the clinical training, a complete education is provided. But not all online programs are accredited, which is critical for obtaining employment and certification (more on accreditation later). So confirm that any online college you are considering is accredited by an acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are dedicated enough to study with a less structured form of education, then online training may be the ideal solution for you.

Pharmacy Technician Certifications Offered

Certification is not required in every state, but a large number of graduates of pharmacy technician schools choose to get certified so as to be more qualified when seeking employment. Additionally, a number of Kwethluk AK pharmacies will only hire a technician that is certified. There are 2 organizations that offer certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requires that the applicant be at least 18 years old, be a high school graduate, has completed a training program, and has at least one year of professional experience. The PTCB just requires that the applicant has a high school diploma and passes their exam. Recertification is mandated every 2 years by each program, which may be satisfied by performing 20 hours of continuing education.

Points to Ask Pharmacy Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Kwethluk AK pharmacy technician schoolsAfter you have decided whether you would like to attain a degree or a certificate, and if you prefer to enroll in an online school or go to classes on campus, you can start to narrow your school alternatives. There are numerous pharmacist technician schools to pick from in the Kwethluk AK area and throughout the United States, so you need to create a list of qualifying questions so that you can compare colleges and vocational schools. As we discussed in our introduction, you will probably first start looking for colleges that are within both your financial budget and driving distance from your Kwethluk home. If you are willing to move or are have decided to enroll in an online pharmacy tech program, then location may not be significant. But there are many other issues that you must take into consideration so that you may properly compare colleges. The following questions will help you to gather that information and help you to make your ultimate selection.

Is the Pharmacy Technician College Accredited? Most pharmacy tech programs and vocational schools have earned a regional or national accreditation. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Schools earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and verified to provide a comprehensive superior education. Online schools may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals solely with distance or online learning. Don’t forget to verify that the certificate or degree program together with the college you select are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency. Besides helping ensure that you get a quality education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Also, certification may require that the program of training is accredited. And a number of Kwethluk AK pharmacies will only hire entry level employees that have earned a degree from an accredited school.

Does the School Prep You for Certification? Certification is not required in all states, but a number of pharmacies desire that the techs they employ are certified. The pharmacy technician college should prep its students to pass the PTCB or the NHA exam. Students interested in obtaining NHA certification will also need 1 year of work experience. This condition can be satisfied by participating in a school sponsored internship program.

Does the School Sponsor Internship Programs? As we previously covered, the NHA requires one year of professional experience for certification, which can be fulfilled by means of an internship program. Perhaps the best way to obtain practical clinical experience as a pharmacy technician is to work out in the field. Most pharmacy technician degree or certificate programs also require clinical training prior to graduation and an internship is an excellent way to meet the requirement. Ask if the programs have a working relationship with Kwethluk AK area pharmacies, hospitals, or clinics for internship programs.

Does the College Offer Job Placement Assistance? Securing that first position in Kwethluk AK upon graduation, especially with no professional experience, can be a difficult endeavor without any support. Ask if the colleges you are researching have job placement programs. If so, find out what their job placement rates are. A higher job placement rate is an indicator that the college has a good reputation within the profession creating demand for its graduates. It also indicates that it has a large network of employer relationships where it can place graduates.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Kwethluk AK home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the pharmacy tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the pharmacy technician school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Kwethluk AK area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
