Because they are not licensed, when filling prescriptions they must work under the supervision of a licensed Sterling AK pharmacist. They must also have great customer service abilities since they will be interacting directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be accurate when preparing prescription medicines per the pharmacist’s instructions. And they need to have a comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terms in order that they can assist customers with understanding instructions for their medications in addition to other pharmaceutical information and literature. However, under no situation should they ever provide medical advice relating to prescriptions or anything else. Any such questions would be handled by the pharmacist. Several of the typical daily tasks a pharmacy technician might carry out are:

  • Welcome and assist customers with medications and other questions
  • Fill prescription medicines under pharmacist supervision
  • Enter prescription and customer data into pharmacy computer system
  • Phone customers when their prescriptions are prepared for pick-up
  • Prepare and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Stock shelves and audit and manage inventory

Due to the nature of their profession, pharmacy techs will spend most of their working day on their feet. And working evenings and weekends is also very common, especially for newer technicians with lower seniority. But the payoff for occasional tired and aching feet or sometimes being required to work after hours is a very satisfying career helping customers with their health and well-being.

Sterling AK student attending online pharmacy tech coursePrior to selecting a pharmacy technician online training program, it’s important to realize that most schools do require a portion of the training be carried out in a clinical environment. This is commonly fulfilled in an area Sterling pharmacy or health center through an internship program. Students often will have the benefit of working with an experienced pharmacy technician in order to acquire some work place experience. Fortunately the balance or non-clinical training may be accessed online in your Sterling AK home or via any available computer. This option is more convenient for many students, especially for those who keep working while attaining their certificate or degree. And online schools are often less expensive than traditional options. Tuition and expenses for driving and study materials can be reduced substantially. With both the online and the clinical training, a complete education is offered. But not all online schools are accredited, which is critical for obtaining certification and employment (more on accreditation later). So confirm that any online program you are looking at is accredited by a recognized accrediting organization, such as the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are disciplined enough to study with a less structured form of education, then online training may be the best option for you.

Pharmacist Technician Certification Choices

It is not required to earn certification in every state, but a large number of graduates of pharmacy technician programs elect to become certified in order to be more qualified when seeking employment. Additionally, many Sterling AK employers will only hire a tech that is certified. There are two organizations that offer certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requirements are that the candidate be at least 18 years old, has graduated from high school, has finished a training program, and has one or more years of professional experience. The PTCB just requires that the candidate has graduated high school and passes their examination. Recertification is mandated every 2 years by both programs, which may be fulfilled by completing 20 hours of continuing education.

Points to Ask Pharmacist Technician Programs

Questions to ask Sterling AK pharmacy technician schoolsOnce you have determined whether you would like to attain a certificate or degree, and if you want to enroll in an online school or go to classes on campus, you can begin to narrow your school options. There are many pharmacist tech colleges to choose from in the Sterling AK area and throughout the Country, so you must create a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast colleges and technical schools. As we addressed in our introduction, you will undoubtedly first start looking for colleges that are within both your financial budget and commuting distance from your Sterling residence. If you are willing to relocate or are going to enroll in an online pharmacy tech school, then location may not be important. But there are several other issues that you must consider in order to adequately compare programs. The questions below will assist you in collecting that information and help you to make your ultimate decision.

Is the Pharmacist Technician College Accredited? The majority of pharmacist tech programs and vocational schools have earned a national or regional accreditation. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Programs earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and verified to provide a comprehensive quality education. Online programs may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals exclusively with distance or online learning. Make sure to verify that the degree or certificate program together with the college you choose are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency. Along with helping ensure that you get a superior education, it might assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Also, certification might require that the training program is accredited. And a number of Sterling AK pharmacies will only hire entry level employees that have graduated from an accredited program.

Does the Program Ready You for Certification? Certification is not required in every state, but numerous pharmacies desire that the technicians they employ be certified. The pharmacy tech college should prepare its students to pass the PTCB or the NHA exam. Students planning on obtaining NHA certification will also need 1 year of job experience. This qualification can be met by taking part in a school sponsored internship program.

Does the College Offer Internship Programs? As we previously covered, the NHA mandates a year of professional experience for certification, which may be met by means of an internship program. Perhaps the best way to obtain hands on clinical experience as a pharmacy tech is to train out in the field. Most pharmacy tech certificate or degree programs also require clinical training prior to graduation and an internship is an excellent way to meet the requirement. Find out if the schools have associations with Sterling AK area pharmacies, clinics, or hospitals for internship programs.

Does the School Provide Job Placement Help? Finding that first position in Sterling AK upon graduation, especially with no prior experience, can be a difficult endeavor without any help. Ask if the colleges you are considering have job assistance programs. If so, ask what their job placement rates are. A high job placement rate is an indication that the school has a good reputation within the profession generating appeal for its graduates. It also means that it has a substantial network of employer relationships where it can place graduates.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Sterling AK home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the pharmacy technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the pharmacist technician school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Sterling AK area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
