We will go over these qualifications and some others that you will need to include when reviewing pharmacy technician schools. But first, let’s take a look at what a pharmacy tech does, the certificate and degree options available, and the advantages of online courses.

The Job of a Pharmacy Tech

Verdi NV pharmacy tech filling prescriptionPharmacy technicians have multiple job responsibilities, but their principal responsibility is to dispense prescription medicines. Since they are not licensed, when dispensing prescriptions they must perform under the supervision of a licensed Verdi NV pharmacist. They must also have great customer service skills since they will be dealing directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be accurate when preparing prescription medications per the pharmacist’s instructions. And they must have an extensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terms in order that they can assist customers with understanding directions for their medications as well as other pharmaceutical literature and information. On the other hand, under no situation should they ever offer medical advice relating to medications or anything else. Any such questions would be directed to the pharmacist. A few of the typical daily tasks a pharmacy tech might carry out are:

  • Welcome and help customers with prescriptions and other questions
  • Dispense prescription drugs under pharmacist direction
  • Enter customer and prescription information into pharmacy computer system
  • Contact customers when their prescriptions are prepared for pick-up
  • Prepare and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Stock shelves and monitor and manage inventory

Due to the nature of their job, pharmacy technicians will spend the majority of their working day standing. And working weekends and evenings is also very common, particularly for newer techs with lower seniority. But the reward for occasional tired and aching feet or occasionally being required to work after hours is a very fulfilling career assisting people with their health and wellness.

Pharmacy Technician Degrees and Diplomas

There are basically 2 alternatives to training to be a tech regardless if you enroll in a community college or a trade school. The first is to attain a diploma or a certificate, which usually can be accomplished in a year or less. These programs offer an overview to the various elements of pharmacology and pharmaceutical technology and generally include lab and classroom training. Many programs also require an internship at {an approved|an accepted Verdi NV pharmacy or other facility. The second option is the Associate Degree program which typically involves about two years of studies. Although not needed for most entry level positions, it does provide a more extensive education and can lead to more advanced positions or education in the future. Each program can furnish the proper amount of training to pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination should the graduate decide to become certified.

Pharmacy Tech Online Schools

Verdi NV student attending online pharmacy tech coursePrior to choosing a pharmacist tech online program, it’s necessary to realize that most programs do require a portion of the training be completed in a clinical setting. This is typically satisfied in an area Verdi pharmacy or hospital through an internship program. Students in most cases will have the benefit of working under an experienced pharmacy technician in order to obtain some real world experience. Fortunately the balance or non-clinical training can be accessed online in your Verdi NV home or via any available computer. This option is more accommodating for many students, particularly for those who continue to work while earning their degree or certificate. And online colleges are sometimes less expensive than classroom options. Tuition and expenditures for driving and study materials may be decreased substantially. With both the online and the clinical training, a complete education is offered. But not all online schools are accredited, which is critical for securing certification and employment (more on accreditation later). So check that any online program you are considering is accredited by a recognized accrediting organization, for example the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are dedicated enough to study with a less structured form of education, then online training may be the right solution for you.

Pharmacy Technician Certifications Offered

Certification is not required in every state, but a large number of graduates of pharmacy technician colleges opt to become certified in order to be more competitive in the job market. Also, many Verdi NV pharmacies will only employ a technician that is certified. There are 2 organizations that provide certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requirements are that the applicant be 18 years or older, has graduated from high school, has completed a training program, and has at least one year of professional experience. The PTCB just requires that the candidate has graduated high school and passes their examination. Recertification is required every 2 years by each program, which can be met by completing 20 hours of continuing education.

Questions to Ask Pharmacy Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Verdi NV pharmacy technician schoolsAfter you have decided whether you would like to earn a certificate or degree, and if you want to enroll in an online college or attend classes on campus, you can start to target your school alternatives. There are a large number of pharmacy technician schools to choose from in the Verdi NV area and throughout the Country, so you need to develop a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast community colleges and trade schools. As we addressed in our introduction, you will most likely first start looking for colleges that are within both your financial resources and driving distance from your Verdi home. If you are willing to relocate or are going to enroll in an online pharmacy tech college, then location may not be important. But there are many other factors that you should take into consideration in order to adequately compare colleges. The questions below will assist you in collecting that information and help you to make your final choice.

Is the Pharmacy Tech School Accredited? Most pharmacy technician programs and vocational schools have acquired a regional or national accreditation. One of the most respected accrediting agencies is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Colleges earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and certified to furnish a comprehensive superior education. Online colleges may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals only with distance or online education. Be sure to verify that the degree or certificate program in addition to the school you pick are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency. Besides helping ensure that you get a quality education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Also, certification might require that the program of training is accredited. And a number of Verdi NV employers will only hire entry level employees that have earned a degree from an accredited school.

Does the School Ready You for Certification? Certification is not required in every state, but numerous pharmacies prefer that the techs they employ be certified. The pharmacist tech school should prep its students to pass the NHA or the PTCB examination. Students planning on obtaining NHA certification will also need one year of professional experience. This qualification can be met by taking part in a school sponsored internship program.

Does the College Provide Internship Programs? As we just discussed, the NHA requires a year of experience for certification, which may be satisfied by means of an internship program. Perhaps the best way to obtain practical clinical experience as a pharmacy tech is to train out in the field. Most pharmacy tech degree or certificate programs also require practical training prior to graduation and an internship is an excellent way to satisfy the requirement. Check if the colleges have a working relationship with Verdi NV area pharmacies, clinics, or hospitals for internship programs.

Does the College Offer Job Placement Assistance? Finding that first job in Verdi NV after graduation, particularly with no prior experience, can be a difficult undertaking without any help. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have job placement programs. If they do, ask what their job placement rates are. A high job placement rate is an indication that the school has an excellent reputation within the field creating appeal for its graduates. It also signifies that it has a sizable network of employer relationships where it can refer graduating students.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Verdi NV residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the pharmacy technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the pharmacist technician school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Verdi NV area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
