Woodbury NJ student attending online pharmacy tech courseBefore choosing a pharmacy technician online training program, it’s necessary to realize that the majority of schools do require a portion of the training be carried out in a clinical setting. This is usually fulfilled in an area Woodbury pharmacy or hospital by means of an internship program. Students often will have the benefit of working with a seasoned pharmacy tech so as to receive some real world experience. However the non-clinical portion of the training can be accessed over the internet in your Woodbury NJ home or via any available computer. This option is more practical for most students, particularly for those who keep working while attaining their certificate or degree. And online colleges are often more affordable than traditional options. Tuition and expenses for driving and study materials may be reduced significantly. With both the online and the clinical training, a complete education is provided. But not all online programs are accredited, which is critical for obtaining employment and certification (more on accreditation later). So check that any online school you are looking at is accredited by a recognized accrediting organization, for example the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are disciplined enough to learn with a less supervised form of education, then online classes might be the right option for you.

Pharmacist Technician Certification Options

Also, many Woodbury NJ employers will only hire a technician that has earned certification. There are 2 organizations that provide certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requirements are that the applicant be 18 years or older, has graduated from high school, has completed a training program, and has at least one year of work experience. The PTCB only requires that the applicant has a high school diploma and passes their exam. Recertification is mandated every two years by both programs, which may be met by completing 20 hours of continuing education.

Questions to Ask Pharmacist Technician Programs

Questions to ask Woodbury NJ pharmacy technician schoolsAfter you have decided whether you would like to earn a certificate or degree, and if you want to enroll in an online college or go to classes on campus, you can start to target your school alternatives. There are many pharmacy technician colleges to select from in the Woodbury NJ area and throughout the USA, so you need to create a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast community colleges and vocational schools. As we discussed in our introduction, you will undoubtedly first start looking for schools that are within both your financial resources and driving distance from your Woodbury home. If you are able to move or are going to enroll in an online pharmacy tech school, then location may not be critical. But there are many other issues that you should consider in order to properly compare schools. The following questions will help you in collecting that information and help you to make your final selection.

Is the Pharmacist Tech Program Accredited? The majority of pharmacy technician colleges and vocational schools have obtained a national or regional accreditation. Among the most respected accrediting agencies is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Colleges earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and verified to furnish a comprehensive superior education. Online programs may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals only with distance or online education. Be sure to confirm that the degree or certificate program together with the college you choose are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency. Along with helping make sure that you obtain a superior education, it might assist in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Also, certification may mandate that the training program is accredited. And many Woodbury NJ pharmacies will only hire entry level employees that have graduated from an accredited program.

Does the Program Ready You for Certification? Certification is not required in all states, but many employers desire that the techs they hire are certified. The pharmacist tech school should prep its students to pass the PTCB or the NHA exam. Students interested in obtaining NHA certification will additionally need 1 year of professional experience. This qualification can be fulfilled by entering a college sponsored internship program.

Does the College Provide Internship Programs? As we previously discussed, the NHA requires 1 year of job experience for certification, which can be satisfied by means of an internship program. Perhaps the best way to obtain practical clinical experience as a pharmacy technician is to work out in the field. Most pharmacy technician degree or certificate programs also require practical training in order to graduate and an internship is an excellent way to satisfy the requirement. Check if the colleges have associations with Woodbury NJ area pharmacies, clinics, or hospitals for internship programs.

Does the College Give Job Placement Help? Finding that first position in Woodbury NJ upon graduation, particularly with no experience, can be a difficult endeavor without any support. Find out if the colleges you are looking at have job assistance programs. If they do, ask what their job placement rates are. A higher job placement rate is an indication that the college has a good reputation within the field generating demand for its graduates. It also indicates that it has a sizable network of employer relationships where it can refer graduates.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Woodbury NJ home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the pharmacist tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the pharmacist tech college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Woodbury NJ area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
