The Function of Pharmacy Technicians

Woonsocket SD pharmacy tech filling prescriptionPharmacy technicians have numerous job duties, but their primary duty is to dispense prescription medicines. Since they are not licensed, when dispensing prescriptions they must work under the supervision of a licensed Woonsocket SD pharmacist. They must also have excellent customer service skills since they will be working directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be absolute when preparing prescription drugs per the pharmacist’s directions. And they must have an in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical terms so that they may assist customers with understanding instructions for their prescriptions as well as other pharmaceutical literature and information. On the other hand, under no circumstance should they ever provide medical advice concerning medications or anything else. All such questions should be directed to the pharmacist. Several of the regular daily duties a pharmacy tech may carry out are:

  • Greet and assist customers with medications and other questions
  • Dispense prescription medicines under pharmacist direction
  • Add customer and prescription data into pharmacy computer system
  • Phone customers when their medications are prepared for pick-up
  • Fill out and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Re-supply shelves and monitor and manage inventory

As a consequence of their job, pharmacy technicians will spend the majority of their working day standing. And working weekends and evenings is also very common, particularly for newer techs with low seniority. But the reward for occasional tired and aching feet or sometimes having to work after hours is an extremely rewarding career assisting people with their health and wellness.

Woonsocket SD student attending online pharmacy tech courseBefore deciding on a pharmacy tech online program, it’s necessary to understand that most programs do require that a substantial part of the training be completed in a clinical environment. This is typically fulfilled in an area Woonsocket pharmacy or hospital by means of an internship program. Students often will have the benefit of working under an experienced pharmacy tech in order to acquire some real world experience. However the balance or non-clinical training can be taken online in your Woonsocket SD home or via any available computer. This option is more practical for many students, notably for those who keep working while earning their degree or certificate. And online schools are sometimes more affordable than traditional options. Tuition and costs for driving and study materials may be decreased substantially. With both the clinical and the online training, a comprehensive education is offered. But not all online programs are accredited, which is important for securing employment and certification (more on accreditation later). So verify that each online school you are looking at is accredited by a recognized accrediting organization, such as the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are disciplined enough to learn with a less formal type of education, then online instruction might be the ideal option for you.

Pharmacist Tech Certification Choices

Certification is not required in all states, but many graduates of pharmacy technician colleges elect to get certified so as to be more competitive in the job market. Additionally, a number of Woonsocket SD pharmacies will only hire a tech that has earned certification. There are 2 organizations that offer certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requirements are that the candidate be 18 years or older, be a high school graduate, has finished a training program, and has at least one year of work experience. The PTCB just requires that the candidate has graduated high school and passes their exam. Recertification is required every two years by both programs, which can be satisfied by performing 20 hours of continuing education.

Points to Ask Pharmacist Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Woonsocket SD pharmacy technician schoolsAfter you have decided whether you want to earn a certificate or degree, and if you prefer to enroll in an online college or go to classes on campus, you can begin to target your school options. There are numerous pharmacy tech colleges to pick from in the Woonsocket SD area and throughout the Country, so you need to create a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast community colleges and trade schools. As we addressed in our introduction, you will probably initially look for colleges that are within both your financial resources and commuting distance from your Woonsocket residence. If you are able to move or are have decided to enroll in an online pharmacy tech program, then location may not be important. But there are a number of other issues that you must take into consideration in order to adequately compare colleges. The questions below will help you in gathering that information and help you to make your final selection.

Is the Pharmacist Technician College Accredited? The majority of pharmacist technician programs and trade schools have earned a national or regional accreditation. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Programs earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and certified to offer a complete superior education. Online schools may additionally obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals solely with online or distance learning. Make sure to verify that the degree or certificate program as well as the college you choose are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency. Along with helping make sure that you obtain a superior education, it might help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Also, certification may require that the training program is accredited. And many Woonsocket SD employers will only hire entry level employees that have earned a degree from an accredited school.

Does the College Prep You for Certification? Certification is not mandated in every state, but many employers prefer that the techs they employ be certified. The pharmacist technician college should ready its students to pass the PTCB or the NHA examination. Students planning on obtaining NHA certification will also need 1 year of work experience. This requirement may be satisfied by taking part in a school sponsored internship program.

Does the College Sponsor Internship Programs? As we just covered, the NHA mandates one year of job experience for certification, which can be fulfilled with an internship program. One of the best ways to acquire hands on clinical experience as a pharmacy tech is to train out in the field. Most pharmacy tech certificate or degree programs also require practical training prior to graduation and an internship is a great way to satisfy the requirement. Check if the schools have associations with Woonsocket SD area pharmacies, hospitals, or clinics for internship programs.

Does the College Offer Job Placement Assistance? Finding that initial job in Woonsocket SD upon graduation, especially with no prior experience, can be a difficult task without any support. Find out if the colleges you are looking at have job assistance programs. If they do, find out what their job placement rates are. A higher job placement rate is an indication that the school has a good reputation within the profession generating appeal for its graduates. It also signifies that it has a substantial network of pharmacy contacts where it can refer graduates.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Woonsocket SD home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the pharmacist technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the pharmacist tech school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Woonsocket SD area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
