Of course the first step is to find colleges that offer the degree or diploma that you are interested in. While cost and location are important concerns when choosing a college, they are not the only ones. Qualifications including accreditation and reputation should be considered also. And if you prefer studying in your home by means of your computer as opposed to in a classroom, then searching for an accredited online program will also be included in your vetting process. We will go over these qualifications and others that you will need to include when reviewing pharmacy technician schools. But first, let’s discuss what a pharmacy tech does, the diploma and degree options available, and the advantages of online courses.

The Function of Pharmacy Technicians

Winfield TN pharmacy tech filling prescriptionPharmacy technicians have numerous job functions, but their principal responsibility is to dispense prescription medicines. Since they are not licensed, when filling prescriptions they must operate under the management of a licensed Winfield TN pharmacist. They must also have excellent customer service skills since they will be working directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be absolute when preparing prescription drugs per the pharmacist’s directions. And they must have an in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology in order that they may help customers with understanding directions for their prescriptions in addition to other pharmaceutical information and literature. However, under no situation should they ever offer medical advice pertaining to prescriptions or anything else. All such questions would be handled by the pharmacist. Some of the common daily duties a pharmacy technician may carry out are:

  • Receive and assist customers with medications and other questions
  • Prepare prescription drugs under pharmacist guidance
  • Input customer and prescription data into pharmacy computer system
  • Phone customers when their prescriptions are prepared for pick-up
  • Prepare and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Re-supply shelves and monitor and manage inventory

As a consequence of their job, pharmacy techs will spend the majority of their working day on their feet. And working evenings and weekends is also typical, especially for newer technicians with lower seniority. But the reward for occasional tired and aching feet or occasionally having to work off-hours is an extremely rewarding career assisting people with their health and well-being.

Pharmacy Technician Diplomas and Degrees

There are generally two alternatives to training to be a technician regardless if you enroll in a community college or a trade school. The first is to attain a certificate or a diploma, which typically can be finished in a year or less. These programs provide an introduction to the different facets of pharmacology and pharmaceutical technology and typically include lab and classroom training. Numerous programs also include an internship at {an approved|an accepted Winfield TN pharmacy or other facility. The second option is the Associate Degree program which typically requires about 2 years of studies. Although not needed for most entry level positions, it does furnish a more extensive education and can lead to more advanced positions or education in the future. Each program should furnish the proper level of training to pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam should the graduate choose to get certified.

Pharmacy Technician Online Colleges

Winfield TN student attending online pharmacy tech courseBefore selecting a pharmacy technician online college, it’s necessary to realize that the majority of schools do require that a substantial part of the training be conducted in a clinical setting. This is commonly fulfilled in a local Winfield pharmacy or hospital through an internship program. Students often will have the benefit of working under a seasoned pharmacy tech in order to receive some work place experience. Fortunately the balance or non-clinical training can be taken over the internet in your Winfield TN home or via any available computer. This alternative is more accommodating for many students, notably for those who keep working while acquiring their degree or certificate. And online programs are often more affordable than traditional options. Tuition and expenditures for driving and course materials can be decreased substantially. With both the clinical and the online training, a complete education is provided. But not all online schools are accredited, which is essential for securing certification and employment (more on accreditation later). So confirm that any online program you are reviewing is accredited by a recognized accrediting agency, for example the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are dedicated enough to learn with a less formal type of education, then online classes may be the right solution for you.

Pharmacy Tech Certifications Offered

It is not required to earn certification in all states, but many graduates of pharmacy technician schools choose to become certified in order to be more qualified in the job market. Also, a number of Winfield TN pharmacies will only employ a technician that has earned certification. There are 2 organizations that offer certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requires that the applicant be at least 18 years old, has graduated from high school, has completed a training program, and has one or more years of professional experience. The PTCB only requires that the candidate has a high school diploma and passes their examination. Recertification is required every two years by each program, which can be satisfied by performing 20 hours of continuing education.

What to Ask Pharmacy Tech Programs

Questions to ask Winfield TN pharmacy technician schoolsOnce you have decided whether you wish to attain a certificate or degree, and if you prefer to enroll in an online college or attend classes on campus, you can start to target your school alternatives. There are many pharmacist tech schools to choose from in the Winfield TN area and throughout the United States, so you need to create a list of qualifying questions so that you can compare colleges and vocational schools. As we covered in our introduction, you will most likely first start looking for schools that are within both your financial resources and commuting distance from your Winfield home. If you are willing to relocate or are going to enroll in an online pharmacy tech school, then location may not be important. But there are several other issues that you need to consider in order to effectively compare programs. The following questions will assist you in gathering that information and help you to make your ultimate decision.

Is the Pharmacy Technician Program Accredited? Many pharmacy tech colleges and vocational schools have earned a regional or national accreditation. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Colleges earning accreditation from the ASHP have been screened and verified to provide a comprehensive quality education. Online programs may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals only with distance or online learning. Don’t forget to verify that the degree or certificate program in addition to the school you select are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency. Besides helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Also, certification might mandate that the training program is accredited. And many Winfield TN employers will only hire entry level employees that have graduated from an accredited program.

Does the College Prep You for Certification? Certification is not mandated in every state, but a number of employers desire that the techs they hire are certified. The pharmacist technician program should prepare its students to pass the PTCB or the NHA exam. Students interested in obtaining NHA certification will additionally need one year of professional experience. This condition can be met by taking part in a college sponsored internship program.

Does the School Sponsor Internship Programs? As we previously covered, the NHA mandates a year of job experience for certification, which may be met with an internship program. One of the best ways to acquire practical clinical experience as a pharmacy technician is to work out in the field. Most pharmacy tech degree or certificate programs also require clinical training prior to graduation and an internship is a great way to meet the requirement. Ask if the colleges have associations with Winfield TN area pharmacies, clinics, or hospitals for internship programs.

Does the College Give Job Placement Help? Finding that initial position in Winfield TN upon graduation, particularly with no prior experience, can be a challenging endeavor without some assistance. Find out if the schools you are researching have job assistance programs. If so, ask what their job placement rates are. A higher job placement rate is an indication that the college has a good reputation within the field creating appeal for its graduates. It also signifies that it has a sizable network of employer contacts where it can place graduates.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Winfield TN residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the pharmacy tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the pharmacist tech program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Winfield TN area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
