And if you are interested in attending classes in your home by means of your computer rather than in a classroom, then searching for an accredited online college will also be included in your vetting process. We will cover these qualifiers and some others that you will need to include when reviewing pharmacy technician schools. But first, let’s take a look at what a pharmacy technician does, the degree and certification options available, and the benefits of online programs.

The Function of Pharmacy Techs

Woden TX pharmacy tech filling prescriptionPharmacy techs have numerous job functions, but their principal responsibility is to dispense prescription medicines. Since they are not licensed, when dispensing prescriptions they must operate under the supervision of a licensed Woden TX pharmacist. They must also have great customer service skills because they will be interacting directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be precise when filling prescription medicines per the pharmacist’s instructions. And they need to have an in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology so that they can assist customers with understanding instructions for their prescriptions in addition to other pharmaceutical literature and information. However, under no circumstance should they ever give medical advice relating to medications or anything else. Any such questions should be addressed by the pharmacist. Several of the regular daily services a pharmacy tech may perform are:

  • Welcome and help customers with medications and other questions
  • Dispense prescription medicines under pharmacist guidance
  • Enter customer and prescription data into pharmacy computer system
  • Phone customers when their medications are ready for pick-up
  • Complete and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Re-supply shelves and audit and manage inventory

As a consequence of their profession, pharmacy techs will spend most of their working day on their feet. And working evenings and weekends is also typical, especially for newer technicians with low seniority. But the payoff for occasional tired and aching feet or sometimes being required to work after hours is a very fulfilling career helping customers with their health and wellness.

Woden TX student attending online pharmacy tech courseBefore selecting a pharmacy technician online school, it’s important to realize that the majority of schools do require a portion of the training be completed in a clinical setting. This is typically satisfied in a local Woden pharmacy or health center through an internship program. Students in most cases will have the opportunity to work with a seasoned pharmacy technician so as to acquire some work place experience. Fortunately the balance or non-clinical training may be accessed over the internet in your Woden TX home or via any available computer. This alternative is more practical for many students, notably for those who continue to work while attaining their certificate or degree. And online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Tuition and expenditures for driving and study materials can be decreased substantially. With both the online and the clinical training, a comprehensive education is provided. But not all online schools are accredited, which is essential for securing certification and employment (more on accreditation later). So confirm that each online college you are considering is accredited by a recognized accrediting agency, for instance the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are dedicated enough to learn with a less supervised form of education, then online training might be the ideal solution for you.

Pharmacy Technician Certifications Available

Additionally, a number of Woden TX pharmacies will only employ a tech that is certified. There are two organizations that provide certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requirements are that the candidate be at least 18 years old, be a high school graduate, has finished a training program, and has at least one year of work experience. The PTCB just requires that the applicant has graduated high school and passes their exam. Recertification is required every two years by each program, which can be satisfied by completing 20 hours of continuing education.

Points to Ask Pharmacist Technician Schools

There are many pharmacist tech programs to choose from in the Woden TX area and throughout the United States, so you need to create a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast community colleges and technical schools. If you are able to relocate or are have decided to enroll in an online pharmacy tech college, then location may not be significant. But there are several other factors that you should take into consideration in order to adequately compare colleges. The following questions will assist you in collecting that information and help you to make your final choice.

Is the Pharmacy Tech College Accredited? Many pharmacist technician programs and trade schools have obtained a national or regional accreditation. Among the most respected accrediting agencies is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Programs earning accreditation from the ASHP have been screened and certified to furnish a complete quality education. Online schools may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals only with distance or online learning. Don’t forget to confirm that the degree or certificate program in addition to the college you select are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency. Besides helping guarantee that you obtain a superior education, it might help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Also, certification may require that the program of training is accredited. And a number of Woden TX employers will only hire entry level employees that have graduated from an accredited program.

Does the College Prepare You for Certification? Certification is not mandated in every state, but numerous employers prefer that the technicians they hire be certified. The pharmacy technician college should prepare its students to pass the NHA or the PTCB exam. Students interested in obtaining NHA certification will also need one year of job experience. This requirement may be met by taking part in a college sponsored internship program.

Does the College Provide Internship Programs? As we previously discussed, the NHA mandates 1 year of job experience for certification, which can be met through an internship program. One of the best ways to get hands on clinical experience as a pharmacy technician is to train out in the field. Most pharmacy tech degree or certificate programs also require clinical training prior to graduation and an internship is an excellent way to fulfill the requirement. Find out if the schools have a working relationship with Woden TX area pharmacies, clinics, or hospitals for internship programs.

Does the College Give Job Placement Assistance? Securing that first position in Woden TX after graduation, particularly with no professional experience, can be a difficult task without any help. Ask if the schools you are researching have job placement programs. If so, find out what their job placement rates are. A higher job placement rate is an indicator that the college has an excellent reputation within the profession creating demand for its graduates. It also means that it has a large network of pharmacy relationships where it can place graduating students.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Woden TX home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the pharmacy technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the pharmacist tech program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Woden TX area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Woden, Texas

The area of Nacogdoches County was settled by immigrants from the Old South in the 1830s and was known as Jacobs, then later called King's Store. In 1886 a post office was established and the community was named Woden after the Old English deity Woden. In the 1890s, Woden residents moved the community to a location closer to a nearby railroad which had bypassed them, and named their new town Oval. In 1895 this town, at the current location, was then renamed Woden. The chief economic activity until the 1930s was logging, which later declined. Agriculture is now responsible for notable business in the region.[1] It was known as a sundown town.

Although Woden is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 75978;[2] the ZCTA for ZIP Code 75978 had a population of 137 at the 2000 census.[3] Woden is home to a post office, a K-12 school, and a Baptist, Presbyterian, and United Pentecostal church, as well as a volunteer fire department.
