Because they are not licensed, when dispensing prescriptions they must perform under the supervision of a licensed Warrenton VA pharmacist. They must also have great customer service abilities because they will be dealing directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be accurate when filling prescription medicines per the pharmacist’s instructions. And they must have a comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terms in order that they may help customers with understanding instructions for their prescriptions as well as other pharmaceutical literature and information. On the other hand, under no circumstance should they ever offer medical advice pertaining to medications or anything else. Any such questions would be directed to the pharmacist. Some of the regular daily services a pharmacy technician might carry out are:

  • Greet and assist customers with prescriptions and other questions
  • Dispense prescription medicines under pharmacist direction
  • Add prescription and customer data into pharmacy computer system
  • Call customers when their prescriptions are ready for pick-up
  • Prepare and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Re-supply shelves and audit and control inventory

Due to the nature of their job, pharmacy technicians will spend the majority of their working day standing. And working weekends and evenings is also typical, particularly for newer technicians with low seniority. But the reward for occasional tired and aching feet or sometimes being required to work after hours is a very fulfilling career helping customers with their health and well-being.

This is typically satisfied in an area Warrenton pharmacy or health center through an internship program. Students in most cases will have the benefit of working under an experienced pharmacy technician so as to get some real world experience. Fortunately the non-clinical portion of the training can be taken online in your Warrenton VA home or via any available computer. This option is more convenient for many students, especially for those who keep working while acquiring their certificate or degree. And online colleges are frequently more affordable than classroom options. Tuition and expenses for driving and course materials can be reduced substantially. With both the online and the clinical training, a comprehensive education is offered. But not all online schools are accredited, which is essential for securing certification and employment (more on accreditation later). So verify that any online school you are reviewing is accredited by a recognized accrediting agency, for instance the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are dedicated enough to learn with a less formal type of education, then online classes might be the ideal solution for you.

Additionally, many Warrenton VA employers will only employ a tech that has earned certification. There are 2 organizations that provide certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requirements are that the applicant be at least 18 years old, has graduated from high school, has finished a training program, and has at least one year of work experience. The PTCB only requires that the candidate has graduated high school and passes their examination. Points to Ask Pharmacy Technician Schools

Questions to ask Warrenton VA pharmacy technician schoolsOnce you have decided whether you would like to obtain a degree or a certificate, and if you want to enroll in an online school or go to classes on campus, you can start to narrow your school options. There are many pharmacy technician programs to choose from in the Warrenton VA area and throughout the United States, so you must develop a list of qualifying questions so that you can compare community colleges and vocational schools. As we covered in our introduction, you will probably initially look for programs that are within both your financial budget and commuting distance from your Warrenton home. If you are willing to move or are going to enroll in an online pharmacy tech school, then location may not be important. But there are several other variables that you must consider so that you may adequately compare colleges. The questions below will help you in gathering that information and help you to make your final choice.

Is the Pharmacist Technician College Accredited? Many pharmacy tech programs and vocational schools have acquired a regional or national accreditation. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Schools earning accreditation from the ASHP have been screened and certified to furnish a comprehensive quality education. Online programs may additionally earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals only with distance or online education. Don’t forget to check that the certificate or degree program as well as the school you select are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization. Along with helping ensure that you get a quality education, it might assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Also, certification may require that the program of training is accredited. And a number of Warrenton VA pharmacies will only hire entry level employees that have earned a degree from an accredited school.

Does the School Prep You for Certification? Certification is not required in all states, but a number of pharmacies desire that the techs they employ are certified. The pharmacy tech school needs to prep its students to pass the NHA or the PTCB exam. Students planning on obtaining NHA certification will additionally need 1 year of work experience. This qualification may be met by taking part in a school sponsored internship program.

Does the School Provide Internship Programs? As we just discussed, the NHA mandates 1 year of experience for certification, which can be fulfilled with an internship program. One of the best ways to get hands on clinical experience as a pharmacy technician is to train out in the field. Most pharmacy technician certificate or degree programs also require clinical training in order to graduate and an internship is a great way to satisfy the requirement. Check if the colleges have associations with Warrenton VA area pharmacies, hospitals, or clinics for internship programs.

Does the School Offer Job Placement Assistance? Getting that first position in Warrenton VA upon graduation, especially with no experience, can be a challenging undertaking without any help. Ask if the colleges you are considering have job placement programs. If so, ask what their job placement rates are. A higher job placement rate is an indicator that the school has an excellent reputation within the field generating demand for its graduates. It also means that it has a sizable network of employer contacts where it can place graduating students.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Warrenton VA residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the pharmacist technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the pharmacist technician school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Warrenton VA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
