The Role of Pharmacy Techs

Twin Lakes WI pharmacy tech filling prescriptionPharmacy technicians have numerous job duties, but their primary responsibility is to dispense prescription medicines. Because they are not licensed, when dispensing prescriptions they must work under the supervision of a licensed Twin Lakes WI pharmacist. They must also have great customer service abilities because they will be interacting directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be precise when filling prescription medicines per the pharmacist’s directions. And they must have an in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology in order that they may assist customers with understanding instructions for their medications as well as other pharmaceutical literature and information. However, under no situation should they ever give medical advice relating to prescriptions or anything else. Any such questions should be addressed by the pharmacist. Some of the regular daily tasks a pharmacy technician might perform are:

  • Greet and assist customers with medications and other questions
  • Fill prescription drugs under pharmacist guidance
  • Add customer and prescription information into pharmacy computer system
  • Contact customers when their prescriptions are ready for pick-up
  • Fill out and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Stock shelves and monitor and manage inventory

Due to the nature of their profession, pharmacy techs will spend the majority of their working day standing. And working evenings and weekends is also typical, particularly for newer technicians with lower seniority. But the reward for occasional tired and aching feet or at times being required to work off-hours is a very rewarding career assisting customers with their health and wellness.

Many programs also require an internship at {an approved|an accepted Twin Lakes WI pharmacy or similar facility. The second option is the Associate Degree program which typically involves about two years of studies. Pharmacist Technician Programs Online

Twin Lakes WI student attending online pharmacy tech courseBefore deciding on a pharmacy tech online college, it’s necessary to realize that the majority of programs do require a portion of the training be completed in a clinical environment. This is usually fulfilled in a local Twin Lakes pharmacy or health center through an internship program. Students in most cases will have the opportunity to work with an experienced pharmacy technician in order to receive some real world experience. Fortunately the non-clinical portion of the training can be accessed over the internet in your Twin Lakes WI home or via any available computer. This option is more practical for most students, particularly for those who continue to work while attaining their certificate or degree. And online programs are sometimes more affordable than classroom options. Tuition and costs for driving and course materials can be decreased substantially. With both the clinical and the online training, a complete education is provided. But not all online schools are accredited, which is essential for securing employment and certification (more on accreditation later). So verify that any online program you are reviewing is accredited by a recognized accrediting organization, such as the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are dedicated enough to study with a less structured form of education, then online training might be the best solution for you.

Pharmacist Technician Certification Choices

Certification is not required in every state, but many graduates of pharmacy tech programs elect to become certified in order to be more competitive when seeking employment. Also, many Twin Lakes WI pharmacies will only hire a technician that is certified. There are two organizations that offer certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requirements are that the candidate be at least 18 years old, be a high school graduate, has completed a training program, and has one or more years of professional experience. The PTCB only requires that the candidate has a high school diploma and passes their exam. Recertification is required every two years by both programs, which may be fulfilled by completing 20 hours of continuing education.

Points to Ask Pharmacy Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Twin Lakes WI pharmacy technician schoolsOnce you have determined whether you want to obtain a certificate or degree, and if you want to enroll in an online college or go to classes on campus, you can begin to narrow your school alternatives. There are a large number of pharmacist tech programs to pick from in the Twin Lakes WI area and throughout the Country, so you need to develop a list of qualifying questions so that you can compare community colleges and trade schools. As we covered in our introduction, you will most likely initially look for programs that are within both your financial resources and commuting distance from your Twin Lakes home. If you are willing to relocate or are have decided to enroll in an online pharmacy tech program, then location may not be significant. But there are a number of other factors that you must take into consideration in order to properly compare schools. The following questions will assist you in gathering that information and help you to make your ultimate selection.

Is the Pharmacy Technician School Accredited? Many pharmacist tech colleges and vocational schools have earned a national or regional accreditation. One of the most respected accrediting organizations is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Colleges earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and verified to provide a comprehensive quality education. Online programs may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals exclusively with distance or online learning. Be sure to check that the degree or certificate program as well as the college you choose are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education sanctioned accrediting agency. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Also, certification may require that the program of training is accredited. And many Twin Lakes WI employers will only hire entry level employees that have earned a degree from an accredited school.

Does the College Ready You for Certification? Certification is not required in every state, but a number of pharmacies desire that the technicians they hire are certified. The pharmacist technician school needs to prepare its students to pass the PTCB or the NHA exam. Students interested in obtaining NHA certification will additionally need 1 year of work experience. This condition may be met by taking part in a school sponsored internship program.

Does the College Offer Internship Programs? As we previously covered, the NHA requires one year of experience for certification, which can be met with an internship program. Perhaps the best way to get practical clinical experience as a pharmacy tech is to work out in the field. Most pharmacy tech degree or certificate programs also require clinical training in order to graduate and an internship is an excellent way to fulfill the requirement. Ask if the programs have a working relationship with Twin Lakes WI area pharmacies, hospitals, or clinics for internship programs.

Does the College Provide Job Placement Assistance? Finding that first position in Twin Lakes WI after graduation, particularly with no experience, can be a daunting endeavor without some assistance. Find out if the schools you are considering have job assistance programs. If they do, ask what their job placement rates are. A higher job placement rate is an indication that the school has an excellent reputation within the field generating demand for its graduates. It also means that it has a large network of pharmacy contacts where it can refer graduates.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Twin Lakes WI residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the pharmacist tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the pharmacy technician college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Twin Lakes WI area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
